Ever since the HTC Butterfly/DNA were announced back in 2012, manufacturers have all been catching up to 5 inch displays (Nokia, Sony, Motorola). This has pretty much made it the standard (most common) screen size.
Actually, you'll be hard pressed to find a company that's worth a damn release anything smaller than 5 inches on their high end devices these days.
So like I said before, the "new" standard is going to be the once-unfathomable 5.5 inch display @ various resolutions.
It's pretty obvious. Hell, even Apple is starting to conform.

5 inch screens are so 2012. The new standard will soon be 5.5 inches, 2560x1440 @ ~534.04 ppi. Anything less is a waste of a device.
Currently, 5.99 in, 2560x1440 @ 490.35 ppi would be ideal. This is also my personal limit on display size. Higher resolutions are welcomed though.
Late 2nd, early to late 3rd quarter, I expect a few flagship devices to be sporting 5.5 in, 3840x2160 @ 801.06 ppi as well as 5.99/6.0 in, 3840x2160 @ 735.53/734.3 ppi.
On my Note 3, with moderate use, I get 2 days + use sometimes @ 1080p. This is with 3 hours of screen-on time. With heavy use, 4+ hours of screen-on time, I get anywhere from 18-21 hours. That's very good for a 3200 mAh battery. It effortlessly gets me through my entire work day with plenty of power left over for play.
With the higher resolutions above, a 3600-4000 mAh battery will perform nicely, off-setting the power draw required to enjoy WQHD/QFHD (4K) displays. I welcome it.

For those who don't know AUO is a really high-calibur Taiwanese firm that provides displays to Acer, Sony, and I think Apple too. They work on the OEM level (I.e. provide displays to other Consumer Electronics makers) mostly. So this is good news as we'll probably see these screens on a large number of devices.

Anything beyond 340-350 ppi is just extra gpu stretch your eyes simply can not see the difference, anyway why don't oems use amoled panels more?? Only samsung... and few alcatels and motorolas... they have so many things going for them. Are they that expensive to make? That's the reason?

More like AUO get a life? Seriously who needs 4k or wqhd on a 5" mobile display?! Improve the battery technology a little instead, it's like running a ferrari engine on wooden wheels!

AMOLEDs always struggle to cope up when they display white backgrounds or lighter brighter shades of colors. This has always been it's problem. Smartwatches tend be dominated by darker zones so it helps in extending battery life. That is all fine. But such crazy PPIs are not needed on smartphones and not helpful in battery life.

Waste of battery processing all that extra pixels. I use a Note 3 with a 5.7" FHD Super AMOLED screen, and I really can't tell compared to my Note II with 720p resolution. 300ppi is optional enough for very clear images.
If it wasn't for having LTE, I would have not considered getting the Note 3 at all.

Why 587PPI? Isn't 300+ or so what the average people will be able to distinguish? So much pixels, for me, only strain battery and GPU for zero gain. 1920x1080 in 5 inches is more than enough.

Anything beyond 1080p for mobile displays like 5" is a WASTE and RIDICULOUS IMO. What we need is a OLED panelled television? Where the heck are they?

1440p is not WQHD. It's QHD. W stands for Wider. It's anything wider of standard. But it's not wider of 2560.
2731x1440 or 3440x1440 - those are WQHD.
