Snapdragon 865's first Geekbench results match Qualcomm's promises

By Qualcomm’s numbers, the Snapdragon 865 chipset will have a 25% faster CPU, 20% faster GPU than its predecessor, the 855 (note: not the plus upgrade). Early benchmark results have appeared in the Geekbench v4 database. There are some scores from version 5 of the benchmark, but they don’t seem reliable.

It looks like Qualcomm has delivered on its promises – the multi-core and single-core numbers have seen a 22-23% increase over the Snapdragon 855 results. The 855+ chip has essentially the same CPU performance as the 855 and a faster GPU, but Geekbench doesn't test graphics performance.

We’ll have to wait and see how the new Exynos flagship will perform, but the Snapdragon 865 has a good chance of being the fastest Android chipset of early 2020. Keep in mind that the MediaTek Dimensity is also in the mix and its AnTuTu score shows great promise. Huawei will likely use the Kirin 990 5G for its early 2019 flagship, the P40.

Since Samsung killed its custom CPU core division – and Huawei always stuck with ARMs designs – we’ll probably see Android flagships perform about the same, regardless of which brand chipset they use. This also means that Apple’s performance will remain out of reach for the foreseeable future.
