Nokia 2 to get Oreo update soon, but there's a catch

Peter, 25 January 2019

HMD’s Pie update roadmap had a conspicuous absence – the Nokia 2. Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer, got plenty questions about it on Twitter and posted an explanation of what’s going on.

The Nokia 2 is not getting Pie and while it's due for an Oreo serving, it comes with fine print. Since Oreo requires more resources, it will not run as smoothly as Nougat (the phone’s original software).

So HMD will give you the choice: stick with the old Nougat software or get the more recent Oreo at the cost of UI snappiness. The option to update will be available soon.

The 1GB of RAM is the culprit here. Google only supports Android Go on phones with this little RAM and it’s not possible to install Go on a phone that launched with regular Android. That’s why the Nokia 1 (a Go edition phone) is getting Pie.

HMD worked with Google and Qualcomm to deliver the best possible Oreo experience for the Nokia 2, but it’s not going to be perfect.

True. In Oreo, you cannot even record calls! That was a bad step from Google.

We have known this since the beta edition. All who tried Oreo Beta, rolled back to Nougat. Isn't there a way to give it to service and have it rooted with original Android Go ?

Well you expect a cheap phone not to break down every update, explode *cough Note 7!* or simply cease to function properly unless it has a hardware issue in which case is a reason to RMA the device. :)
