The reason why Windows Phone 7.x didn't get Windows Phone 8 is because of the difference in Kernels. Windows Phone 7.x is written on NT kernel while Windows Phone 8 is on a different kernel that enables support of a processor more than a single core. This is why none of the phones are upgraded to Windows Phone 8.
As far as Windows Phone 9, I don't know at which kernel it will be on but the chances are the same as Windows Phone 8. If not, then Microsoft will provide an update as promised so that all the Windows Phone 8 will be updated to Windows Phone 9 as the current Windows Phone 8 are on GDR3 while they will be updating to Windows Phone 8.1 shortly.
Things from Windows Phone 8 are pretty much changed.

However, lets not forget the that the excuse given previously was inadequate or incompatible hardware. Now who defines the hardware, even more so with the upcoming purchase of Nokia by MS? MS, of course, and a bitter personal experience with MS has shown they are quite capable of deliberately building in obsolescence to their phones to get oput of providing updates in SW. So we will see what actually transpires. I hope my cynacism is wrong but their track record is not good and I would want more than this article before buying a WP8 device given their previous track record quite honestly.

For those who think Samsung et al are bad for updates, you can look forward to no major updates for this device ever. MS have a long track record of it. No device running WM5 got an update to 6, no updates from 6 to even 6.5, let alone WP7, and none from 7.x to 8. So should MS bring devices with say 9.x next year, which is quite likely, and you have purchased this phone on a 2 year contract you can look forward to a year of playing catch up. Just great for a flagship phone

I am in love .. I have had my S II for more than 2 years now .. and this Lumia 1520 is the only phone in the market that really moved my senses .. it has everything that worth upgrading my phone:
- Microsoft OS (vs Android, something different)
- Larger Screen
- Higher Res ,, and much higher ppi
- Better Camera (Miles better)
- Magnificent build quality ,, I love the red color ,, sexxxy
- It's not Apple
Can't wait ....

Very nice smartphone, it would totally replace my need for a computer. Will seriously invest with this one. Hopefully it will fare better than HTC One Max in battery tests. GSMArena kindly review this great device. Nokia, release this very soon here in SG. Thanks
