Sony Xperia Z1 Compact hands-on: First look

6 January 2014
We recently had the chance to get some hands-on time with Sony's new flagship in miniature, the Xperia Z1 Compact. The little fella packs flagship-grade specs into a much smaller footprint than most of today’s premium smartphones...

LL, 07 Jan 2014Yes, the bezels are kinda huge, however this phone still lo... moreReally? Because I like to look at my phone from the front....And front view these are just large bricks to me.
Nothing flashy, special, beautiful, or anything.
I can honestly say from the back view I think they look rather pleasing actually...But as you can see that is not very practical. I think even the "cough" Samsung "cough" design looks well more pleasing from the font.

And I would say that hands down the Motorola Droid Razr Xt912 demolishes any other phone in looks.

But looks are preference. And Z line is on the larger side even for it's screen factor.

AnonD-209094, 07 Jan 2014Well im not so sure, the pixel density is pretty low compar... more342PPI is still very sharp and less work on the GPU. As well as this has a far superior camera and has camera flash as compare to the Z. Also the over 6inch mark is not for everyone. And I believe this is also stronger glass.
So in comparison this could be favored by many more than the Z. The Z left more to be desired.

This masterpiece is a true successor of the rich Xperia Ray, back in Sony Ericsson days, when Arc was the flagship and the Ray was exactly the same spec even the screen resolution, save the size.
Respect to Ray and now the Z1 Compact

lol, 07 Jan 2014It is even better than my xperia ZWell im not so sure, the pixel density is pretty low compare to Z, it is hard to downgrade from 441 to this.

Most people forget one thing about PPI, and that is that its a 1-dimensional value used to describe 2-dimensional density, to really compare PPI values they have to be squared, represented as Pixels Per Square Inch, or better Pixles Per mm2 (P/mm2).

Looking at the 1-dimensional PPI value most of us would conclude that 441 ppi is only 29% better than 342 ppi, but square the numbers and we see that 441 is 66% better than 342 (194481 vs 116964)

Wish it was thicker, shorter and not as wide. This one is still big enough to break in the pocket, as what happened to my Xperia Z last week, it broke while i was doing my GF over in the backseat.

I have used some pretty thick phones over the years and the thickness of old phones has never bothered me as much as the size of newer phones. My Xperia U is 12mm thick but extremely pocket friendly, my Xperia Mini is a staggering 16mm thick but disappears in my pocket, more than once have i been searching myself and "what the F did i lose my phone?".

Z1 Compact should be 3mm smaller in length and width and 11 mm thick, that would make it truly compact and give it a bigger battery at the same time. Double win.

This phone is not trying to compete with the "real" flagships of other OEMs.

This phone doesn't compromise with specs unlike other minis **cough s3 mini, s4 mini, htc one mini**

And why, all of a sudden, does a mini device have to have the absolute best chipset to be acceptable? The short answer: it doesn't, you're full of crap. You're just manufacturing things to complain about. Snapdragon 800 is the absolute top of the line at this point. There IS NOTHING else that they could possibly put in it at this point, so for you to criticize Sony for using it just shows how clueless you are. The 805 will not be available in time for the S5 to use it (assuming the S5 is released in March), let along the Z1 Compact.
