Sony at IFA 2016: Xperia XZ and X Compact hands-on

31 August 2016
Asus folks certainly had a stretch of sleepless nights preparing for this year's IFA and brought a huge number of devices - some entirely new, others already announced, but not all of them available.

AnonD-448401, 01 Sep 2016i am glad they used 650 for compact coz its more power effi... moreThe 650 is more power efficient than the 820???? First time I've seen that claIm made.

The 650 uses stock arm reference designs, namely the A53 & A72 built on a 28nm process for the CPU, I really doubt that is more power efficient that the Kryo set up (14nm) in the 820.

Agree that the lower resolution will likely make things easier for the Adreno 510, but this'll likely balance out when that 28nm process is taken into account.

Also remember that the 650 uses a much less capable ISP set up than the 820, and that it has to push that camera.....here's hoping this new imx300 sensor proves more efficient than its predecessors.

For price, I expect Sony to display their usual measure of arrogance and lack of common sence, I reckon £579.99 for the XZ and £449.99 for the X compact in the uk. Both a good £50+ more than they should be, but we'll see.

Vic, 01 Sep 2016Can anyone explain me why every new Compact model becomes t... moreIt is thicker by 0.02 inches ? That really makes a difference to U ? Really ? Can U even tell that difference in real life between 2 objects if no one told U the numbers ?
Complain about something that is actually worth complaining about .

The edges are so sharp, you could really hurt yourself if the phone fall on your front feet.... Sorry that is the first thing I think of when saw the phone's sharp edges....

Sony CEO: I'm tired of the 'Z' name.
Team: Okay Sir, How about the name 'X'? (X-Peria)
Sony CEO: Ok, Sounds good to me. Let's discontinue the Z series.
          -1 week later
Sony CEO: I still like the 'Z' name though
Team: Okay Sir, How about we release a phone called Z6?
Sony CEO: No! That'd be old school, we're innovative. Make it different!

6-12 months later. IFA Expo 2016
Sony CEO: Today, I'm happy to announce our new flagship, Xperia XZ!
Audience: What? Why? Cool. "Real Successor of Z5"...

I don't get Sony... XZ is what the XP should've been...

AnonD-287672, 01 Sep 2016Disappointed with : 1. 32 GB internal and 3GB RAM.I know t... moreAnd still they place the camera up in the corner of the phone....that was my biggest gripe with my Z1...I always hold my phones with two hands when taking photos so I don't drop it, my finger tips end up in the photo as they wrap around the edge of the phone, really annoying! Come on Sony, move the camera to the middle of the phone!

Can anyone explain me why every new Compact model becomes thicker than previous one? What is the hell going on with Sony? X Compact has the same battery and unlike Z5 - no water proof, but became much thicker than Z5 Compact ( which wasn't a thin phone to begin with) ?
Honestly, guys, looking at the models Sony released within last 1.5 years, I think they would better quit smartphone business for good. Or sell the name to Chinese manufacturers which I'm sure will make a better phone under Sony logo than Sony itself.

                  Disappointed with :
                  1. 32 GB internal and 3GB RAM.I know that there is microSD expansion but when your competitors are already ahead, you need to play the same ball game .
2.Not a big deal breaker tho but absence of sd820 on X compact. It should have been the XZ compact that was unveiled -a true compact successor to Z5 compact.I will add no waterproofing to this con because this is the X compact and the X isn't waterproof.
                  3. Huge bezels and thickness ! Atleast bring the Screen to body ratio to 70-72%.Don't give me crap about the Waterproof stereo speakers . Look at the Axon 7 - it has the best speakers in business with minimal bezels .
                  4.Battery: I'm fine with the X compact's battery capacity but the XZ - should've been atleast 3100mAh.
                  5. The only complaint I have with their cameras . OIS is standard on most flagships these days and it is useful especially for low light scenarios, so I don't get the omission.
6.Price - I know that it's still not launched but as we all can predict these phones won't be cheap .
This isn't hate for Sony, I just had a lot of expectations for them and I was really excited for IFA but they did disappoint me ! :(

                    "it's busy with the PlayStation"
Yeah. Too busy and less-care about their (actualy) great smartphone. But XZ still amazing Z6.
                    3GB RAM(?)

X compact based on X .... why couldn't it be based like XZ or the Performance model. Plus the X was the shit device for its price, at least in India as you could get a flagship like the Samsung S7 or an HTC 10 for almost the same cost with better specs and performance.

So... I'm a little disappointed. SD650, ok, I could live with that.. it does make some sense.

But they made it super-fat.. and where's the silver version? Most crucially though.. no waterproofing. What??? That's the main draw.. Not sure I can stomach that.

The XZ looks great, though. Will have to check it out in shops and see if I can deal with the extra size. X Compact is a bust for me though... :/

Previous model Xperia X was more... moreActually it is the old sensor, but they combiding with new autofocus technology, and maybe minor adjustment. The sensor is already good, though. I just wish they use new lenses, F2.0 is ok but G lenses have very soft corner and not crisp details(they end up sharpening picture in post and resulting in over-sharpen).

Cant wait to se that cam in action :-)
                                      And Shutterspeed control :-)

Fatal design. Nothing new. Previous model Xperia X was more elegant. I think this phones are step back. Sony design=Microsoft design.
