Mobile phone evolution: Story of shapes and sizes

15 July 2010
This week we step away from our usual line of work to do some time travel. We’re looking back at the ten years that we’ve been following the mobile phone industry. It doesn’t start nor end with us, but we just couldn’t resist the temptation...

Thank You so much "gsmarena" for that wonderful article of yours.!I read every word that you write. ^_^ i am a fan of your site since 2007 when one of my classmates introduce your site to me. I really like and love the way you review phones because "You Judge and not Criticize" I'm just wondering why i don't see these following phones at your site: "Nokia 7705 Twist, Motorola RIZR Z8 Ferrari Edition, Motorola RAZR2 Luxury Edition, and at the news column, i haven't seen the "Nokia Concept Phone Nokia 7480". I've sent you an e-mail last month about those but i haven't got any reply from you but that's ok because i include it again here at my comment. :-D

I also want to thank you for the "Very nice, well-done review at the Nokia 7500 Prism phone which is currently my phone since last year March 2009". I also want to thank you for your "Compare" Section because i compared my Prism to other handsets namely the 5310 Xpressmusic, and the 6500 Classic that's why i ended up with my "lovely, unique, and irresistible Nokia 7500 Prism." by the way, I've noticed that one of my Prism's Music Player Theme namely->"Magnetic" is also used in Nokia's Arte phone line-up (specifically the Gold Arte')!!haha..

Thank you again "gsmarena"!! God-bless.. -->Zeke

Good article, I think though screen sizes will drop to just under 4 inches, or phones will lose the bezel with edge to edge display. I've got a Galaxy S and it just feels that bit too big in the pocket.

very nice article! to be honest, I also go to another "arena" website for articles, because that other site, has new articles every day, BUT, they are usually biased, untrue and not much useful articles, I kind of consider it as a phone gossip site, they should change there name to phonegossip.com...oops ;)

I guess the next big revolution would be the gesture control. With some few phones entering the market like the Yari, a proper developement will change the game. For now, all we can have are niche devices but I don't see that the technology would soon be extinct as it's already popular in japan. And did I mention the wii?

Really great read! Quite amazing how much can change it just 10 years! And it really is quite hard to imagine where we'll be in another 10 years!

Maybe you could do another article on the technical advances that have been made in the past ten years? Such as batteries, cameras, storage, processing power and OSs.

I also submitted this article to digg.com if anyone wants to give it the thumbs up!

Great Article, should come up with these types time to time. It is just amazing to see how the mobile industry has changed in the past 10 years.

I would love to see the Nokia 8110 with an update. Colour screen, different coloures. I don't want web browsers or advanced features, it a great simple phone that needs to stay simple. A classic like this should be updated, and I will surely buy one..
