Samsung Galaxy S III Jelly Bean review: Bread and butter

1 October 2012
The official rollout of the Galaxy S III Jelly Bean update has finally started. In the next few weeks it should land on just about every Exynos-powered S III unit out there, letting it have a taste of the latest and greatest from Android...

Anonymous, 03 Oct 2012to the SG3 haters out there, this latest battery test gives... moreInclude that it's running twice as many cores as i% and it makes this more impressive.

However this is a double edged sword...

i5 has a much smaller battery...

Also that i5 manages to match or beat the SGS3 in most benchmarks whilst running on only two cores at lower clock speaks very highly of it's software optimisation, though as iOS only runs on 5 different devices this is easier for Apple to do (fragmentation is a real and major issue for Android).

This doesn't alter the fact that Android, when optimised can be as efficient as iOS6. And with the freedom to use some of the highly refined custom ROMs just makes it that much of an user orientated choice.

to the SG3 haters out there, this latest battery test gives evidence that the upgrade to JB 4.1 is noteworthy.
That it can manage a 50hr score, only 1 hr behind iP5, despite a significantly larger screen is proof that the android platform is extremely flexible and powerful when implemented correctly and Samsung hardware is definately some of the best available. When you factor in this phone has one of the biggest screens out there and combines so many features with a very reasonable price (in Australia the 16GB can be bought for $500.00, $300 cheaper than iP5) means this has to be one of the best all round phones on the market no exception..

Anonymous, 02 Oct 2012Actually he's right in the way. JB compensate lag by taxing... moreLolololol,

this proves you know nothing about how computers work.

What has performance to do, with resource use?

Boosting performance means, that the UI became faster, smoother, more fluid.

That it is heavier on the GPU has nothing to do with performance ^^ The phone did not become slower because of that. And the battery itself holds out even longer than before. So in which way do you have a problem with it? You want magic? Everything should work even better and use less resources? You know, such things are based on electrotechnics and not magic. Do not even compare that to apple, because apple is no different. Their OS became heavier too, why else would they need better hardware? 3GS on iOS6 lags, on iOS5 not so much, why? Because it became heavier, used more of the GPUs resources, but if the GPU can handle it just fine, why shouldnt you use it?

Anonymous, 02 Oct 2012Actually he's right in the way. JB compensate lag by taxing... moreHahaha, and when the iPhone doesnt lag, it doesnt use up more gpu? Get your knowledge right. Of course it is going to use more of the GPU, why should it? Why should it not be used to its full potential? Do you really believe, you will ever start an application, which will show the differences, of having JB or ICS on the phone, GPU wise? Do you think your game will lag now and with ICS it didnt? Did any OS actually become lighter? No to all of these questions. Windows 8 tried to be lighter, but then, you got windows 8 RT and windows Phone 8... You see, not really less resource eating. Did iOS become lighter? hell no.

People complain it lags, they do something about it and it is totally normal, if you have a knowlegde of computers, that it eats more resources.

But seeing it the other way around, did you see the Battery Test after JB update? Probably not, or you wouldnt have said such garbage.

Anonymous, 02 Oct 2012some people automatically think when they hear plastic is c... moreTrue story, the aluminium used on the iphone 5 is actually of cheap quality, if anodized in the right way, even the inside of aluminium gets the same colour and if it scratches, you still see the same color, unlike on the iPhone 5. Nokia uses plastic too, but there is nothing cheap about it. People who use iPhone, say that Samsung is cheap plastic, because it is the only difference, where they think, iPhone is actually superior, but knowing physics very well, I know, this is just knowledge of unkowning people, who think as far a greeks thought in anchient times. Something falls down, because it comes from the ground, something goes up (fire), because it comes from the heaven, fire came from a thunder thrown by zeus.

get what I mean, this whole cheap plastic talk, is talk from people with dangerous half knowlegde.

N9 is probably the most beautiful phone ever made with an OS which could really have been something. But Nokia killed Maemo and with it the N9 died a premature death. I wish Nokia had embraced Android.

This IS a firmware upgrade! Did you expect a whole UI overhaul? Project butter, Google Now and the new notifications bar are integrated into the OS and these couldn't have been brought over as separate application updates.

But the questions is, what did you really expect with the Jelly Bean update? It's got everything that Google promised in I/O 2012 along with a few extra goodies from Samsung. I don't understand why you are upset.

Loepoes, 02 Oct 2012Sorry my friend but I'm definately NOT an Apple fan. Actual... moreThis is true. There is no reason why Samsung couldn't use higher quality materials that are ultra light and more resilient:
                          - hardened Magnesium alloy(s)
                          - Kevlar
                          - Carbon fibre / graphite composite
                          - or go the full hog for a titanium alloy (though VERY expensive)

I've got SGS 1, 2 & 3 and I miss having some metal for that 'solid' and luxury feel to round out a quality phone.

The only thing that is missing in this update, in my opinion, is the new Gallery, as the one found in Note II, at least add new transitions for us to view the pictures, I know it's not a must have feature, but if we have that, it's perfect!! BTW, this update is really good with no bugs!! Can't wait for it!!
