Samsung keen to start making LPDDR6 RAM ahead of Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 release

Yordan, 14 March 2024

Samsung and SK Hynix are working together to get a certification on LPDDR6 RAM as soon as possible. According to industry insiders, the Korean companies are ready to begin manufacturing the memory chips once a standard is approved by the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council).

Expectations are regulations and documents to be published in the second half of the year, and Samsung wants to ready the new memory chips for phones with Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, as generative AI models could surpass the 10 billion parameter threshold.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has an NPU that supports a generative AI model with one billion parameters on-device. Going beyond the 10-billion step would mean the generative AI would understand the video better and create more accurate programming algorithms, improving the overall smartphone performance.

LPDDR6 is still lacking a clear roadmap, especially when it comes to bandwidth and how much of it would be allocated to AI processes. Samsung has been improving LPDDR5 (to 5X and 5T) by focusing on low price and high power efficiency rather than actual performance, and this would have to change once JEDEC, the international organization responsible for semiconductor standards, finalizes the new version.

In layman's terms, LPDDR6 RAM with Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could bring the next step of artificial intelligence features in smartphones as early as 2025. We might see actual videos being edited in real-time or even generated out of thin air if all goes to plan.

So early 8G4 devices will have 5X or 5T, later 8G4 and 8+G4 will have 6. S25, Mi15, OP13 will all have 5X or 5T then.
