If I'm going to Wellcom or Versatile, how long does it take to change my firmware. Can I wait just for minutes? I don't want to surrender it and wait for a long time.

I'd love to own the Alcatel OT-S853, but unfortunately Alcatel no longer sells its cells in India. I've had three Alcatels before, the OT-512, OT 301 and the OT Easy, and was just hooked on to the French brand. Just adored them. Sadly Alcatel's after-sales in India was poor and when the 512's keypad started giving trouble to the extent that I couldn't sometimes switch the ph back on, I had to go and buy some other brand, because Alcatel had shut shop here altogether by 2006. I've hated every minute of life with the Motorola C118 which I bought simply because it was one of the cheapest options on the market and I was hoping that a miracle would bring Alcatel back to India and then I'd buy my fourth of the company. But no such luck yet. The OT S853 would be really nice. When the withdrawals get too much, I just take out my the defunct old Alcatel sets and stare at them and imagine my Motorola is just a paper-weight lying about! If only I could hear them ring once more!

For Europe and the rest of the western world the S860 will not be the succesor to the S853. The succesor "S" model is still in development and will be announced later.
The 188 version in general does not freeze, atleast not as often as older models... it does happen that the phone resets (but this happens very sporadicly and not often, infact its not even likely to happen). The phone resets so it clears its ram memory so that it operates smoothly again. So in a sense it clears its own faults.
TTThunder: What is minimal talk for you? My phone works for 5 days straight easily. I agree that the 735 was a highly underated phone, it was for its time... simply perfect, the battery was perfect... software was perfect and it was incredibly reliable! The S853 battery is a bit more challenged due to the fact that this phone is much more sophisticated! Its got a stronger signal, TFT display, high fidelity speakers... they all, especially the screen, demand much more power then the 735 demanded... so its normal... however 2 days does seem to low!
You might check if you have your bluetooth switched off... bluetooth is like a killer for your battery and phone, even if you don't actively use it (but do have it turned on) the phones battery will be flat in a day!
Cellphone numbers will only be converted to a name if you enter the number in your phonebook using the internation layout... so instead of "0123456789" you should enter it like this "+99123456789" depending on what country prefix the number has ofcourse!
When you stop the MP3 player by exiting it, it will normally start with the first song... if you stop by just stopping the song... it will restart at that same song again.
Normally, in the 188 version, the phones directory stays at the last contact you have checked... so it is not alphabetically.
The phone will not be charged by the PC through the USB... this was originally planned but then later scrapped... all the new Alcatel models (presented at 3GMS) however do have this function!

1. With 735, I can use the phone for 3 days (minimal talk) or 2 days (heavy talk)...

Now with 853, I can use the phone for less than 2 days... (with minimal talk. I have no use of MP3/radio/... at all during the first few days.)

Is this normal?

2. Now I began to use MP3, I found that now the fully charged batt (I left it charged during the night, so it should be at least 6-7 hours), and it can be used less than 12 hours! (Time for MP3 listening is about 2 hours..)

Is this normal?? Should I have my batt checked?

3. I found that the incoming call list does not convert the cell number to name (even if the cell number is in my contact list)...

Is this a bug?

(If I call that number, the outgoing call list display the name correctly...)

4. When I locked the phone, the side button for MP3 player will be disabled..

I should be able to use the remote control, right? (I found that sometime, the remote control does not seem to respond...)

9. What are shortcut for? (I have used long press at keypad for function/number, but this is limited to 2-9 digit. However, shortcut seems to have 1-20 slots. How can I get to shortcut # > 9?)

iwontworry, sorry but I am not so sure if 1 gb is supported with firmware 177 because I have not actually experienced that version (mine is 18b). This phone is originally made to support up to 512 mb but they tweak it to support 1 GB in version 188.
So sad to hear that the shop where you bought it has poor service. Anyway, warranty covers only free one year parts and service and does not include replacing the defective item with another good one except if the manufacturer itself claim that they have unintentionally disposed factory defective items (including your unit) and therefore have to take it back and replace with good ones. If you buy another unit, that's another thing. May there branch or main branch is in Dagupan and it is there where their good technician is located. Please tell them your situation so that they can fix it immediately. I hope that you can get it back the soonest time possible.

Knight Rider, what I meant is that the cpm (cell phone manager) that you suggested was so difficult to use and I think the trial version cannot do much...
.
I successfully transfer contact from 735 to PC, then from PC to S853. (but they lost the folders, all were put into one folder only..)
.
I tried many times to transfer schedule, but they always fail when trying to write to PC (Lotus organize failure).
.
Now I gave up, if there are any schedule that I like to keep, I just beam it with infrared one at a time.. ;-(

is 1gb mem card good for firmware 177?
well my phone is 177 but the screen doesnt freeze at all. there is no problem aside from the hanging dictionary that can be remedied by pressing some codes...
on my shop problem, its the shop's poor service and not versatile. i mailed versatile and they had an immidiate reply. but this shop where i bought my phone, they totally disapoint their costumers...
one more question, does the warranty include i return the phone and buy other unit. or what can i do to demand them to give me back my phone. they claim that my phone is in dagupan which is 1 hour away from our place. i was about to have my vacation in visayas this month and im stucked here waiting for my phone. i just dont text them but i call them since last week. their replies are "can you get your phone on..." but as usual no phone on the expected day.

Bert, there are lots of cell shop that sells this. Try to look at versatile, wellcom or any other store. But if there is CDR King branch in your area you better go there as they have the cheapest price.

So nelson, that means I don't have to reset it to factory settings. The cause of these freezings is the 177 firmware version.

wontworry, units with version 177 are those that have problems like white screen, hang-ups most of the time, etc. These problems have been resolved in 188 and 18b version.
Here in Cebu, this model was originally Php14,000 when this is first launched some time last year. It is where K750 was Php18,000. Few months after the price had declined. I bought mine at Php 9,000 last January but it was Php 8,300 on March and at March 31 it is Php7,990 and still with 256 mini sd and with 18b firmware version (at RC GOLDLINE).
Please have more patient because versatile does have many products and am sure they have more things to repair to. Just keep on making follow up so that they will attend to you unit the soonest time possible. Just call them if you can because text messages may not be attended immediately.

SaveR, as planned, the successor should be OT S860 but there's no official annoucement for this model yet. There's no details. And if you want to see this model as planned, visit www.wapzon.com. It is there but again, there's no official annoucement about this model yet.

nelson, knight... can you tell us the difference of firmware version 177 and 18b?
i bought my phone last october at 10,900 with a low firmware and free 128mb card. its sad its only 9k today in cebu with high firmware version and free 256mb card. but this is a good news for those who plan to buy the phone...
(i surrendered my phone to the shop i bought my phone because it wont charge and i want to avail the upgrade. i have them checked whats wrong. but until now, three weeks had passed, theres no result. they wont even answer my inquiry texts.
so i have them return my phone to me because its taking them too long just to know whats wrong with my phone. i volunteered to go at versatile myself in makati. but still, no infos from them on the whereabout of my phone. i feel like complaining them in DTI.)
well just an insight, im begining to get angry and disapointed with the shop i bought my celphone.

Sorry for being away for some days... but yes 177 is the firmware version... to all people having trouble with their usb connection/usb recognition of the phone... please mail me at un112@msn.com and I will help you out as I have an instruction file leading you step by step how to correctly install it!

Jerico, you're correct it's the firmware version. So you've purchased the unit with 177 firmware version. Just try to take it to wellcom and ask them to reload it with the latest firmware (18b so far)if they can. If they can't, don't ever surrender your unit to them for reloading with the latest firmware because they will surely return it to versatile and it will take month or two for you to get it back. Take it to versatile personally and ask them to upload it with the latest firmware. Don't forget to bring the warranty card and the official receipt so that they will not charge you. There's something written under the battery above the IMEI. There's a number "177 51fa.." Is that the firmware? is that 177 should be 188? Help

worm, the pc suit that goes with your phone may not be the latest. You can download the latest version from www.my-onetouch.com. Just download and install the pc suite and usb driver and everything will work fine. You may also opt to use card reader.
Jerico, my response for you yesterday is not posted so let me repeat it here. Reset your phone by typing ###847#. After that, set your memory card as your default folder when taking photo and/or video. As I've said above, the pc suite that goes with your phone may not be the latest so download the latest pc suite and usb driver from www.my-onetouch.com. You may also opt to use card reader as this is the safest and fastest way in downloading files from pc and in editing your files. Also, you can only rename the pictures through pc by using card reader. Just load your memory card where you store your photo or video to the card reader and you can finely edit it there. You can create folders for photo or video in phone's memory.
