Lady: Are we the only ones here with the SMS problem? I got my phone's firmware updated for already 2 times at Versatile, but until now my dictionary keeps on hanging. Why can't Alcatel create an option that turns off the automatic saving of words in the dictionary??? I'm sure it has nothing to do with the service providers since the SIM works fine with other phones. Either the people from Versatile are not updating my phone with the latest firmware, which apparently is 18b, at that time, or this bug has not yet been fixed. After only 1 week of having the firmware updated I got the same problem again : the dicitionary hangs, and I fear that in due time the memory will be overloaded again, which probably causes the error of not being able to send and to receive SMS messages. The phone has really the potential to be a very great gadget for an affordable price, but I think that bugs such as this make me really want to buy another cellphone. At least, I could still use the OT-S853 as an mp3player with good speakers...

lady, read this, this might help you. Brought my s853 last friday at Versatile Philippines for upgrade since my unit keeps on hanging when accessing mp3 or memory card contact person is rein (very approachable)i present them nothing since i bought the unit with my cousin who fled 2 months ago at australia living me nothing but charger and headset, i called the office first if i can avail the free upgrade of firmware thay ask me of proof of purchase and i told them the story, she told me that in the absence of pof, warranty card should be presented, told them that i dont have it, she ask me to have a look at the 3 letters after the numbers of the imei which i think is the manufacturing date or maybe release date, she checked the letters and found out that it still covered by the warranty and ask me to visit their office for a free upgrade, the sad thing is after 2 days noticed that the problem is still their. it keeps on hanging and auto shut off and on when opening files from the mmc.

lady, I understand that your phone has an old firmware version (169 or 177) and the only thing that can solve your problem is to take it to versatile or RC Goldline (whichever is nearest you) and have it reloaded with the latest firmware version 197 or higher. But since your problem is about sms sending and receiving, just try to refer it to your provider (smart, globe or sun cellular). They may be able to solve the problem. You may also opt to try to change your sim card (just borrow your friend's sim card) and use it in your phone. If the problem is solved then your sim card is problematic. But if it is not solved, then there is something wrong with your phone and you should take it to versatile or RC Goldline. If you cannot present the proof of purchase or the OR you will charged with approximately 300 to 1000 pesos ( I am not sure).

I' am very disappointed from this phone. There is blue tooth only for audio headset. You can not exchange data with others mobile phones or connect them. If someone know please write me.

The phone was revealed, but not yet officially announced (pricing and release date and full technical specs). That is what I meant.

Just visit www.Getjar.com. There are many games and applications there for alcatel phones and they're all free.

Saska: If you want to buy the phone, try www.protel.de.

Kostas: The phone manufacturers base they standby time measurements on absolute optimum circumstances. That means no calling, no messaging, no browsing, not even turning the screen on or having any network activity... then it could make 330 hours... but its more realistic to make 5 days with this phone with occasional use. I know I make that easily from time to time... Also one tip, try to completely dissable regional message reception (network messages), that can improve your standy time a bit too.

@saska: The phone is not that old. The problem is that Alcatel is not a trendy brand as Sony-Ericsson or as Nokia in Greece, and people won't buy it easily.

@knightrider: I will try to charge the phone more frequently if this is better. However the phone is supposed to have 330 hours of autonomy and I expected to recharge the phone once a week not every 2 days. The autonomy I have observed was 20% of the specs. However, I don't think my battery is problematic (I heard other people having only 2 days autonomy). I rather think the specs are toooooo optimistic.
The bottom line is however that the phone is very nice and quite different from other brands. I am happy to have it...

I had my s853 till 27.01. and I lost it in Salonika - Greece. It did had some problems but I liked it. Now I want to buy new one but in Macedonia (where I live) the oficial provider has no more suplies of this model and they don`t know weather they will have it or not. Is this model so old?

Kostas: read any other manual of any other MODERN phone and all of them will advise to daily charge the phone so thats normal! Also the performance will improve but do not expect to it suddenly having super capacity.

I got this phone 10 days ago. I find it very nice and functional, almost fully featured, and having an excellent sound performance. Using a card reader I have been able to load pictures, ringtones, mp3s and games from the pc easily.
The only drawback -but it's important- is that apparently the battery is much less performant than cited in the specs. About 50 hours of autonomy mostly in standby. If you listen to music this may be even less! However, the battery has been charged only 3 times so far, maybe performance will improve . According to the manual the battery should be charged daily for a best performance but this sounds very strange to me.

tukneneng, the latest price of this phone depends upon the following cell shop:
                                        1) RC Goldline (any branch) = Php 9,090 (USD 185.50). Package comes with 256 MB mini sd card and other accessories provided by alcatel. The store will give you gift item too for this.

                                        2) Air Touch and other cell shops = higher than that price.

I believe that this is much lower if you purchase it in Versatile Telecoms if you are residing in Manila. In RC Goldline, the firmware version is 197. I don't have idea about the firmware version in other stores.

Go buy it and you will surely enjoy.
