Smithravi, 24 Oct 2024Few things to correct:
1. You don't need to enable... more1 It doesn't work on my YouTube account. :( However, the use of the 4K on Sony phones is super limited, as already stated.
2. The human eye can't perceive more than 350 ppi in 6.5 panels. Stating otherwise would be equally informed as stating that the world is flat. And don't keep the panel 15 cm from your eyes. It hurts your eyes. I happen to get my vision checked once a year as I work as a part-time image editor.
3. Mechanical + capacitive is improper in itself. The role of a capacitive button is to mimic the behaviour of a mechanical button. But I like the idea of integrating the zoom in the button, though. On the other side, a capacitive button loses the feel of taking a photo. It's so much less natural.
4. I've double-checked the price. That particular store doesn't list the Xperia 1 VI any more. I'm based in Romania. You can check (I don't believe I'm allowed to drop links here) on the major Romanian retailers as we speak. It's around 1250 in other stores. But I know Germany, The Netherlands, and the UK up the smarphone prices every now and then. The price discussion is irrelevant. All the smarphones included in this discussion are expensive.
5. I am sure you can confirm. I'll pass this information to my wife (she's the main editor in our household). The number of jobs she has already refused from iPhone users (her monitor is professional, color calibrated etc., mine is a simple 4K 32 inch panel) is fun. It goes like this: I need someone to take my photo and make it look exceptional. OK, send the photo. There you go. And then, my wife opens the photo in Photoshop and starts swearing: iPhone pic again. :)) All these devices, be it Sony, Apple, Oppo and what not, are designed to display "nice" photos on their displays. The quantity of artefact in both, say, Samsung and Apple is simply ridiculous. You can't process a decent result even after miles of tweaking in Lightroom. They are striving to make the pics look better, given the size of the lenses. And they've done wonders. But they are still low-consumer wonders. I'm still puzzled why do most of the consumers prefer those fake-looking images, with bumped-up colors, contrast, and sharpness. Whereas, my Nikon 120 mm lenses tell a different story.

Goodthings, 23 Oct 2024We should structure this dialogue.
1. 4K
A 6.5 inch 4... moreFew things to correct:
1. You don't need to enable 4K on YouTube each time. By default it is at QHD and once you choose 4K. I never needed to change. Now I'm doubting your use case. Maybe change settings in your YouTube account??
Also human eye can't perceive more than 350ppi is BS. It depends on lot of factors. For example the distance you're looking at your phone. I can see pixels with FHD screen at 15cmand lower so your argument is invalid here.
Also the pictures and 4K videos you take are useless unless you have 4K screen, your poor eyes can't notice any difference. So maybe everyone should stop recording 4k videos ? Samsung should even dump the 8K because who has 8K TVs and monitors 😂 haha. Also there are few other apps which supported 4K recently on mobile devices. I guess Amazon prime is one of them which played UHD.
2. Trust me and even Apple said it. It is a two in one button. Physical/mechanical plus capacitive. It was proved and quoted by lot of reviewers too. So yes it's more than just mechanical shutter button but it is still a button.
3. Price: Just Google and go to Sony Germany. Select your device and check for handlers. You'll see 1400€ for Xperia 1 VI base price with 256GB. I don't know how you bought it cheaper, maybe you live in Britain? Even their newly launched scarlet red 1 VI is at 1500€ though it's 512 GB.
4. I have seen with my own eyes. I can confirm that videos on iPhone are lot better than any android. Period.

Smithravi, 23 Oct 2024- No, I expect at least QHD for 1400€ where Sony failed. 4K... moreWe should structure this dialogue.
1. 4K
A 6.5 inch 4K display renders approximately 640 ppi. You cannot miss what you cannot see. When Apple patented the Retina Display, they missed the mark with approximately 50 ppi. Back then, 300 ppi was what they called norm. However, the maximum ppi the human eye can perceive is around 350. Your eyes are unable to spot pixels from a 6.5 4K display. They are simply too small. Do you understand that? And then it comes the fun fact that you were actually looking at FHD content. The only instances where Sony Xperia 1 V and the previous models render the content in 4K are very specific: 4K YouTube videos (you have to enable it in settings each and every time, otherwise even YouTube will play FHD), 4K native videos (I'm sure you've shot hundreads :) ), and a few other very specific apps. You actually did not use a 4K display, do you understand that? Back in the day, I compared my Xperia 5 ii with my brother's Xperia 1 ii: played the same 4K video on both. Noone in the room was able to tell absolutely any difference between the two panels. They were identical in rendering, though the 5 ii's was a tad smaller.
2. iPhone button
You are correct, my miss! Though it's capacitive, not mechanical. I've just searched it: lol, they market the existence of the button as they own invention. Yet again, they invent something that has been around for years.
3. aspect ratio
I agree, I too believe it was a move to appease new potential fans. And I miss the 21:9 aspect ratio everybody hated. Somehow, I've got accustomed to this one and I enjoy the fact that most of the movies on streaming services fit better. For regular portrait browsing and Sony movies though, the 21:9 was impeccable.
4. Sony
I can see you appreciate this brand, actually that's why I'm taking the time to answer to your comment. I too had a Z5 for a couple of years. Lovely phone. But I'm slightly puzzled about the price you keep on mentioning. I'm located in the EU. I bought my phone for exactly 1170 euros (which is still expensive imho). And you can easily go for even less and add more storage space on the SD card, should you need it.
5. Cameras
Of course they are closer, it's the same Sony sensor on both devices, apart from software. With video content though I tend to disagree. Once you try to process iPhone videos, you get to see the quantity of artefact. However, they've improved a lot. In my oppinion, any iPhone camera before 13 rendered very poor photos. On the other side, for good videos with the Xperia 1 VI, you need to use the pro mode, I agree. Try shooting in raw and you'll understand my point.

Goodthings, 23 Oct 2024- So you expect 4K from Sony and lower resolution from the ... more- No, I expect at least QHD for 1400€ where Sony failed. 4K comes at the cost of 120Hz. So yes I expect Sony to provide 4K while others QHD at 120Hz.
- Do some research, iPhone has two buttons now. One for power button and other dedicated camera control which acts as shutter button.
- Obviously you are frog in a well. After using both Sony and iphone, 4K Resolution is what I'm missing in iPhone. You keep on use that FHD. But at 1400€, man get out of here with your FHD. I'm not spending that much for FHD.
- They went back on aspect ratio and FHD to appease other fans obviously. FHD for 120HZ even though they can also do it with 4K screen. Who knows what's next.
- You can check my old comments here on gsmarena. Go to Sony Xperia 1 II and Z5 comment section. And come back. I have advocated for Sony for so long but now at this price range, Sony is giving me less compared to others. Of course any smartphone requires compromises. I just find for my use case iPhone better.
Cameras on iPhone are lot closer to Sony than Samsung or pixel. Again I have used both. Videos you can't even argue, iPhone is the best.

Smithravi, 23 Oct 2024- I know Sony was the only manufacturer to give "4K sc... more- So you expect 4K from Sony and lower resolution from the other companies? That sounds almost affectionate; :)
- That is not a dedicated shutter button, neither is it mechanical. That is the power button and it is capacitive;
- No, it doesn't. Unless you have some spider's eyes and are able to see beyond 350 ppi, which no man can. The contrast is great on other devices too. The color range is a joke in relation to Sony's. And that applies to the camera too.
- I don't understand how they "went back" with aspect ratio. They changed it from 21:9 (which was lovely) to 19.5 (which is equally decent). What are you talking about?
- I strongly doubt you've owned a Sony. Otherwise, your comments would be better calibrated.
However, beyond all that, the differences between Sony Xperia 1 VI and other flagship smartphones are not the general differences one would expect between two flagship phones. The phone is exceptional and lovely.

Goodthings, 22 Oct 2024No, I read them quite carefully:
- "No more 4K"... more- I know Sony was the only manufacturer to give "4K screens" on smartphones. I have used 2 phones with that 4K screens and I Loved them. But I don't agree that they downgraded the resolution to show off the world. The main reason is Qualcomm chips can't do 4K @120Hz even today with 8 Elite. Still they could have given us "OPTIONS" to toggle the resolution at that price tag. That is the problem. I want 4K from Sony or at least QHD like competitors at this price range, not FHD.
- From this year iPhone also has dedicated shutter button with extra added features like controlling zoom, exposure etc.,. So no Sony is not the only company anymore. They missed the opportunity to do something innovative like Apple did on this button.
- It is expensive phone because you can get higher resolution, superb contrast and excellent colour range at higher resolution on competitor's devices. My iPhone display has all things you said at higher ppi for same cost as 1 VI. Like I said, I have used two 4K screens and I know what I'm talking. PPI matters on such large phones.
- Also Sony not only went back on resolution, they also went back on aspect ratio. What's next? Micro Sd card? audio jack? You see where it's going. That is the reason I went to iPhones.
- Also what about software support? All companies now giving at least 4 years support. I myself used my last phone over 4 years. For this price 1400€ 256GB, I expect at least 4 years support. That is one more reason for me to switch.

I consideted GSMARENA reviews as a reference to buy a new smartphone until now. Your review over the speakers iphone 16 pro max was a fake and full of missinformation. So you said that has the same speaker system like iPhone 15 pro Max. Your expert is not aware about top and bottom speakers are now better aligned to produce balanced sound and Apple has upgraded the audio hardware, including more advanced amplifiers and speakers that offer a broader range of frequencies. also has used new materials to construct the speaker components. Its clear GSMARENA lost his credibility and prestige in smartphone world

Goodthings, 22 Oct 2024No, I read them quite carefully:
- "No more 4K"... more"please enlighten me what company offers two-step mechanical dedicated shutter button except for Sony."
Nokia Lumia 800 for example which was released 2011, November. If no one uses that since 2011 maybe it's worthless button? Did I miss it? No. Someone misses it? I doubt it.
So I doubt it's a flex to mention it if 1 of 1000 people will use it. I would say it would be a flex to have more features but no it doesn't have more features. Then maybe software support?? No it doesn't matter.
Btw sorry forgot to read other non sense because if "two-step mechanical dedicated shutter button" is a huge flex I doubt that phone has something really useful to offer.

Smithravi, 22 Oct 2024I guess you forgot to read properly this following sentence... moreNo, I read them quite carefully:
- "No more 4K" - this is fun. Sony was and is the only manufacturer to bring 4K 6.5 inch display. That is an overkill, I believe they just wanted to show the world that they can. Switching back to a regular resolution is wellcome.
- "shutter button" - please enlighten me what company offers two-step mechanical dedicated shutter button except for Sony.
- "price range" - yes, you're right, it's an expensive phone and I've written extensively about this. But your idea to question Xperia 1 VI for its display is unintuitive:
-- Superb contrast;
-- Excellent color range (adjustable, for that matter);
-- Uninterrupted 6.5 inch display (no dynamic island, punch holes or other similar nonsensical solutions);
-- Excellent brightness in sunlight.
So, yes, I believe you either haven't used a Sony Xperia 1 VI or you're simply lacking analytical skills.

If only they brought Xperia 1 VI as Xperia 5 VI and reduced some price off, it would have made sense to me. At least they could have provided us with option to turn off 4K to FHD for battery sacrifice. For so long I have been Sony user because of many unique features, but now the reasons have been going down (For example: No more 4K, now other company also providing shutter button in addition to capacitive touch control etc.,.)
I was very happy finally that my phone 16 Pro Max can get easily even with heavy using 8h SOT (at minimum) at 120Hz as well as 2.8k screen. I can understand Xperia 1 VI being top for its FHD screen but it also had similar to 16 Pro Max battery life (maybe 30min more SOT according to GSMARENA tests).

Smithravi, 17 Oct 2024Experience: Android to iPhone 16 Pro Max
Short about me: ... moreI had a similar choice, coming from Xperia 5 ii, and I chose Xperia 1 VI. To answer your your review:
1. Customization: just as you know it, though Android 14 is much better imho.
2. Battery: better than the Pro Max's. For instance, last week, I charged my phone on Wendsday and on Saturday. I didn't even register the fact until today, when I checked my battery in Settings. The battery in Xperia 1 VI is insane.
3. Screen: no cutout, remember? And superb brightness, still featuring the Sony signature panel. You can't compare 1 VI with 1 II in this respect.
4. Heat: same here.
5. Design: same here, except for the dinamic island.
6. Camera: yup, you should see the Sony photos on the 1 VI. Waaaaay better than they were on the second generation. The camera is ahead of its time.
7. Shotcuts: I don't know about that.
1. Notifications: they have been better on Android for ages now.
2. Keyboard: I strongly suggest Swiftkey.
3. Auto suggestions: as long as you're not paranoid, you can let Swiftkey learn your way of replying by giving it access to your emails and messages. I did that 5-7 years ago. The result: there are cases when I reply to an entire email by suggestions alone. That's because we are limited beings and, in many instances, we want to say the exact same thing, but in a different context ;).
4. Copypaste: my point exactly.
5. Weather: yup, I hate them on Android too.
To sum it up: Xperia 1 VI is superb. If you get the chance to try it out, do it. You'll be impressed.
