Peter, 02 Aug 2010Hey great review man. Happy to hear that you're satisfied w... moreHey, thanks.

I am from the UK and using O2. I think I should point out that O2 signal on my iPhone does go up and down but I have yet to drop a call. I have spoken to my colleagues from USA and they also agree that the problems of the reception are a lot network dependent and AT&T is by far the worst to be on hence americans are creating more fuss than anyone else on the planet.

I am happy to answer any question anyone may have for me.

Thanks for reading

I guess this is common with all video calls.

            Yeah I assume he knew the middle one is the Galaxy S. But please keep in mind that the phone on the left is the iPhone 3GS, not the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4 has a much better display than the 3GS. The iPhone 4 resolution is technically better than the Galaxy S as well, though the Galaxy S has better colour contrast (esp blacks).

              Hi

              I got my iPhone 4 with somewhat reluctance 3 weeks ago from apple store regents street. I just want to share my experience with the device over the last 3 weeks. I bought this phone despite having few doubts in mind but Apple offers 30 days returns so I thought let's give it go, I could always return it if I am not fully satisfied with it. Here is what I have found;

              Reception:
              I was skeptical before buying the phone but I am rather surprised to experience "NO Issues of reception" even after trying various ways of holding it. I am quite a heavy user and make quite a lot of calls but this phone hasn't troubled me at all. In fact, sound quality is pretty good. I am not using any type of case or protective shield to block of Antennagate. So In my tests, it performed well during day to day use.

              Retina Display:
              This is something which compelled me to get this phone coz it is amazingly sharp and can't imagine for text to look better than this. I read a lot on web as well as emails very important for me. I am extremely satisfied with this display.

              Camera and Video Calls:
              I am not a hugely interested in these features as such but I did take handful of pictures and they come out pretty good, better than expected. I tried FaceTime few times and It worked well but video quality wasn't quite as sharp compared to Video recording through camera. I guess this is down to lower resolution camera used on the front but nonetheless it performed better than I had expected.

              App Store, IOS, Folders, Multitasking:
              I am impressed the way app store functions and I have already downloaded well over 100 apps, most of them are utilities, business, finance and news apps. The quality of these apps is pretty good and has made my life a lot easier to manage. I have also started to manage these apps in Folders and it's rather nice having grouped them at one place. I have noticed myself using spotlight search more and more to find any particular app I am looking and it functions GREAT! Spotlight has made searching way easier.

              Downsides, Approximeter:
              This is some sort of sensor which switches off the screen while on call. I have noticed it flashing only few times though. I am told by apple staff that Apple is aware of this issue and will be fixed with a software update via iTunes. Not a major issue really but something I would to liked to have fixed so I am keeping an eye out for the update.

              Overall verdict:
              I am pleasantly surprised with this phone and would recommend it with confidence. Especially, usability of the phone is the best thing that struck me. It's very easy to use and I got to typing on touch-based keyboard in only couple of days. My typing speed has also got faster n faster over the last week after the learning curve is over.
              I also like the build quality of the handset, though It has glass back and front but I like the feel of holding it. It also feels a little weighty but I have also found it a plus point having holding something strong and sturdy.
              I would rate it 9/10. I think it's priced well compared to what would you get from the likes worthy competition such as HTC, samsung and Nokia.

              In a nutshell, I am a very happy owner of iPhone 4!

                        This is very important guys -- if you are in an area of low coverage, the call will NOT get dropped if you grip the bottom left side of the phone. However, the bars may decrease. If the call does drop, it would have dropped anyway even if you had held the phone in the right hand! It's just that the bars would not have decreased. I know this is confusing, but this is the software problem Apple was talking about. It may be a stupid problem, but it does not affect the experience of using the phone. I first thought the explanation given by Apple was bullshit, (like most people) but now that I have the phone, I realize that it makes perfect sense.

                        If you grip the phone in the left hand, you will see the actual network coverage (that is, the correct number of bars). This difference in the number of bars is only there if you are in an area of weak coverage. And Apple will soon fix this problem with the new firmware (maybe it already has been fixed) so that you will see the true reception no matter how you hold the phone. If you guys are still confused about this, please reply to this post and I will explain it again.

                        And please note that it's mostly just AT&T customers in the US who complained about the problem (and that to, very few people). In the UK, there were hardly any complaints. I use it on O2 problem free and I have used the phone in some of the most rural areas you can imagine, not just downtown London or Liverpool. Iphone 4 was just launched in Canada, Australia and Singapore...no problems. Doesn't that tell you something?

                        And yes, Bad Apple, I agree, the Samsung Galaxy S is a superb phone. If the battery life, camera and build quality were better, I would certainly consider it equal to the iPhone 4, if not better. But if you like the iPhone 3GS, I would certainly say to go for the iPhone 4 because the reception is a definite improvement. And the noise cancelling feature really works..people can hear you much better.

                          In reply to Bad Apple - my friend, have you used an iPhone 4? Or are you just going by what the media tells you? If you hold the iPhone 4 in that now-famous "death grip", it will cause some bars to go down... this does NOT reduce the reception of the phone! It means that the correct number of bars is shown when you hold the phone in that way...and the difference is only there in areas of low network coverage!

                            [deleted post]He speak english well, but apparently, he (and also me) can't understand how apple user think.

                            I'm very speechless seeing how iphone user try to manipulate everything. Saying apple is the best. For example, apple denied the use of MMS, saying e-mail is better. But then, put MMS on the phone. At the time iphone doesn't have MMS, iphone user try to defend by saying who use MMS anyway. Another thing is multitask. the lack of multitask to partial multitask in iphone4. This always got defended by iphone user. let see in 3-4 years... iphone 7 or iphone8... when they have the real multitask....

                            Bluetooth.... a poor bluetooth support by iphone, and iphone user try to play trick to my mind....

                            USB.... it's a real shame that iphone use a proprietary standard, and even playing cat and mouse with other company on the itunes standard... Nokia rule for using the world standard.

                            and much much more...

                              for those of you who might ask what phone would I buy, I go for 3GS (to show I am not a apple hater), samsung Wave, samsung 3GS, the last two are simply piece of engineering at the highest level and I still will buy 3GS,

                              all of the above you can make a good phone calls with outstanding reception, therefore they can be call a mobile phone, but sadly iphone 4 doesn't not fall in that catogory,

                                    ====================================================
                                    Now, in my opinion, THIS is the only major disadvantage of the iPhone (non jailbroken) at the moment. No widgets...not a big deal. Limited number of home screens...who cares? No flash support for the web browser... if you use the iPhone you will hardly notice that, it still hast the best Internet experience when compared to other phones.

                                    But the bluetooth thing, I agree, is a major feature which is lacking. Again, note that the iPhone has bluetooth, but Apple chose to block that feature. We all know why Apple doesnt allow bluetooth for transfering media like songs and videos... because they have the iTunes store. Fine, but they should allow the transfer of photos and other files! Again, jailbreaking solves this problem but it would have been nice to have this feature without jailbreaking.

                                    By the way, why am I the only guy posting here at the moment? LOL! I need to get back to work!

                                      ===================================================

                                      Yeah nice try but that analogy really doesnt make sense. First of all, the iPhone 4 is not that much more expensive than other similar touchscreen smartphones. (And you're comparing it to a $100,000 Porsche?!)

                                      And for the zillionth time, the iPhone does not have reception problems! Geez! Of course it's not your fault, it's the fault of the media. Have you EVER experienced a dropped call on the iPhone 4? Have you even used one? The iPhone 4 will lose signal ONLY when it is gripped in that unnatural way and ONLY when you are in an area of weak network coverage! And even then, chances are your call won't get dropped, just the reception bars will go down. And if (by chance) your call does drop, the same thing would have happened on most other phones!

                                      Please put this argument to rest. (As well as the no real multitasking argument.) It's getting old now guys.

                                        And let me again reply to my friend below who must have spent half his weekend writing his post on "iPhone 4 flaws" -- almost all the disadvantages you mentioned are nothing compared to the advantages of the iPhone. Mention the phone that you have and I could easily just as well make a similar list of flaws. Only difference is I don't come to this website to bash other phones.

                                        And I hope you are aware that jailbreaking the iPhone makes many if not most of those "flaws" disappear right? Are people on this site even aware of how wonderful and easy (not to mention absolutely legal) jailbreaking is? It solves many of the limitations of the iPhone, while at the same time, keeping all the unique advantages of the iPhone.
