Anonymous, 20 Jul 2010In a way I'm glad that rim, nokia, htc, samsung, and motoro... moreHeres another Nokia e72 at 10mm ,only .7 mm more then the iphone4 at 9.3 and no wrap around the side antenna.
So why do you think this new antenna design of apple is saving so much space to make a smartphone thinner.I'm sure nokia could make an e series at 9.3mm if they wanted to without this wrap around the side antenna idea.

Anonymous, 20 Jul 2010In a way I'm glad that rim, nokia, htc, samsung, and motoro... moreYou said because of the antenna design this is why its the thinnest smartphone.9.3

The e73 is 1mm more at 10.2 and nokia didnt have to use that wrap around the side antenna.

Maybe the iphone4 has better reception then the 3gs when not touching that area but that doesnt mean it has better reception then any other smartphone out there.

                    NEW IPHONE 4 PROBLEMS!

I heard there are new bugs with the Iphone 4's Proximity Sensor. The proximity sensor on the iPhone detects if your face is close to the screen, like it would be during a phone call. If it does so, the iPhone turns off its screen to avoid any accidental input and save power.

The proximity sensor issue manifests itself by the phone incorrectly assuming that you aren’t holding the phone up to your head and turning the screen back on. This happens in the middle of a call and often results in your cheek doing things on your phone without your knowledge.

This antenna design, although criticized by many engineers, is also applauded by some engineers.  It's a good start for Apple. And if there's anyone in the business who has the money and resources to pull this off EVENTUALLY, it would be Apple.  None of them have the balls to go for this design despite all the benefits it brings, because none of them can afford to gamble.  Well Apple can.  And this little mishap will turn into another victorious leap for Apple in the future when they can make this external antenna design work.  While others will be stuck with their internal antennas, leaving their phones bulky with less space efficiency for internal hardware.

The iPhone 4's antenna is the stainless steel band that runs around the edge of the phone. The antenna for WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS is the smaller strip beginning in the bottom left and running to the top, and the cellular radio for voice and data is the much larger strip running around almost three quarters of the phone.

Apple was going to apply an insulative coating atop the stainless steel. Perhaps even use diamond vapor deposition (like they did with the glass screen atop the iPhone 3GS) to insulate the stainless steel from users. We now know rather definitively that this isn't the case. Of course, the result is that anything conductive which bridges the gap in the bottom left couples the antennas together, detuning the precisely engineered antennas. It's a problem of impedance matching with the body as an antenna, and the additional antenna that becomes part of the equation when you touch the bottom left.

The fact of the matter is that either the most sensitive region of the antenna should have an insulative coating, or everyone should use a case. For a company that uses style heavily as a selling point, the latter isn't an option. And the former would require an unprecedented admission of fault on Apple's part.

Anonymous, 20 Jul 2010"the next time"?? What the iphone4g or the iphone... moreThis design, does improve reception. It does make room for more internal hardware elements, like battery, camera, memory, circuitry, etc. So it does have numerous benefits.

If all of then saw the BIGGER PICTURE, this could've been a major opportunity for all phonemakers to put their heads together to make this work, for it would be beneficial for everyone. Instead, they all left Apple alone in the battlefield. And yes, Apple will work this out. And when Apple proves all its detractors wrong and make this external antenna design work, how can the others adapt it when they already showed they're against it?

The iphone4 can do fine w/out a case, except for that one teenie winnie strip that degrades the signal when touched. When they figure out a way to remedy that. Apple will be the only one to deserve credit for it.

In a way I'm glad that rim, nokia, htc, samsung, and motorola all reacted defensively to Apple's press con.  I'm glad they all criticized, mocked, and DISAGREED with the iphone4's antenna design :)

Whether anyone agrees with it or not, it did prove to improve reception for the iphone.  It also saved a lot of internal hardware space, making room for a bigger battery to improve battery life, and is the reason why the iphone4 is the thinnest smartphone in the world.

Only Apple DARED to risk it so they can INNOVATE.  As a first attempt on this external antenna design, I say they did pretty well.  When they figure out a way to make this work without a case and totally ELIMINATE THAT WEAK SPOT (all phones have it right now), let's see what the others will do :)

Oh Steve you're so evil. I think he knows and wants this kind of reaction from the media, the haters, and their competitors.  Apple will push for this design and will make it work, and It would be a big year for Apple next year :)

I wonder what the others would do when Apple makes the external antenna design work, now that they all seem to think it's a ridiculous design :)

So go on haters. Enjoy it while it lasts. You guys will eat your words big time when Apple hits this right the next time :)
