A report on Apple Insider today says that according to Japanese website Macotakara, Apple’s new Lightning dock connector will be able to host USB devices, which means that the manufacturers of third-party accessories will be able to market totally different products than were previously possible with the old 30-pin dock connector. AppleInsider says that up until now, the iPad was the only iOS device that was able to host USB devices, via a Camera Connection Kit. The kit, which was only compatible with the iPad and not the iPhone or iPod touch, enabled the user to connect cameras, wired keyboards and other similar USB devices to their iPad. Now, if this report is proved to be correct, the Lightning connector has built-in USB support, so you may well be able to connect USB accessories to it such as cameras and keyboards, via third-party accessories. Apparently Apple has said that Lighting ports will be supported by third-party accessory makers such as Bose, JBL and B&W.

Semiconductor analyst Linley Gwennap has posted an interesting overview (via CNET) of the series of events that led to Apple's A6 system-on-a-chip, the company's first entirely custom ARM chip design. The report notes that Apple has likely spent in excess of $500 million on the project when including the purchase prices of chip firms P.A. Semi and Intrinsity.
At this point, Apple has spent about $400 million to buy PA Semi and Intrinsity, tens of millions for a license to design its own ARM CPUs, and probably north of $100 million to support its CPU design efforts over the past four years. It appears that the end result will be that Apple ships a Cortex-A15-class CPU about three months before arch-enemy Samsung does. These three months happen to come during the big holiday buying season, during which the iPhone 5 could generate $25 billion in revenue. So that half billion dollars could be money well spent.

AppleInsider writes today that leading Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has said that the iPhone 5 is a “Rolex” in comparison to its competitors, which he says are more like a “Timex.” Munster says that Apple is set to sell between 6 million to 10 million iPhone 5s in the September quarter, which ends at the end of September. Munster has managed to have hands-on time with the iPhone 5, and says that it has an improved feel and build in comparison to previous iPhones. AppleInsider reports that Piper Jaffray and Investing Analytics also kept tabs on how the iPhone 5 went down online, and found that Twitter posts about the new phone saw a 460% year over year increase compared to iPhone 4S launch day, with blog posts about the iPhone 5 also up 100% year over year. Munster said that 73% of tweets about the iPhone 5 were positive, in comparison with 15% for the iPhone 4S launch.

FOR TROLLERS, 18 Sep 201263% of samsung fans want iphone in an isolated island? my f... moreAppleInsider reports today that the first iPhone 5 benchmark test scores have already sneaked their way onto the Internet, via Primate Labs’ Geekbench, and they have thrown up some amazing figures. AppleInsider explains that Geekbench logged a score of 1601 from an “iPhone5x2” running iOS 6 on a dual-core ARMv7 processor, clocked at 1.02GHz and with 1GB RAM. AppleInsider says that while there is no guarantee that it is genuine unless confirmed by Apple, device identifiers are apparently difficult to copy, and the specs used are in line with previous rumours that the A6 chip inside the iPhone 5 has a full gig of DRAM and custom cores for its ARMv7 CPU. Assuming the scores are genuine, then, they show that the iPhone 5 is outperforming even the best of the best performing Android devices (not just phones, but tablets as well). They also more than double the best performance of any previous iPhones, none of which have surpassed a score of 800.

[deleted post]have you at least tried something else to compare? This is not that much "gr8". Its almost the same as iPhone 4S. And if you like iPhones that much, i would suspect that you also have some docks (radio, speaker, etc)... how great it is to be forced to buy new docks or adapters (if any exist)?

Not enough innovation. Android phones remain more customizable and more innovative. Everyone will have to buy new docks or adapter... This one should have been called "the new iPhone 4S" instead of a new version "#5"...

I don’t know why people look at the sales to say something is good. Every people has his/her own choice. If you’re talking about iphone 5 I wouldn’t even purchase an iphone 5 even when it’s price is 10000 Rupees. I would go for Nokia or an android phone. Nokia phones bodies are solid than the others. Their cameras are unbeatable by other phones. Now don’t say that iPhone this iPhone that!. N8 was used for a South African magazine photoshoot I don’t think any of the iPhone will be used for that kind of stuff in the next 100 years. I used to drop my n8 and there wasn’t even a scratch on it’s screen (don’t do that with iPhone because not only screen but it’s body will also get messed up). There’s nothing new in iPhones it’s a mixture of different products in short a copy bundle. That’s my reason not to even look at an iPhone. Now please don’t get all emotional and start an arguement because I just told my opinion I’m not starting an arguement.
