Just purchased ZenFon zoom at BestBuy. For some reason it does not support dual band WiFi. Cannot find my ....-5G access point. Also screen is blinking when taking photos. Effect like you see the computer screen on TV.

Anybody tried using in the dark room. At lowest brightness, anything black, looks a bit reddish.. Not pitch black.

I can run video, 20+ hrs.
Camera great, almost no shutter lag.
                  Problem is with the display.
Also got white line after a week.

I also recommend doing software updates after purchasing the unit. I noticed that there's almost 700mb software update pending after my father purchased the unit. Also, There's a lot of software updates that fixes and updates the camera app's U.I. Once you are connected to the internet, go to settings, scroll down til you see "System updates" then tap "Check update".

try clearing partition cache: https://www.asus.com/zentalk/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=11549&extra=page%3D1 and also do a factory reset after proper backup.

That's right you need to disable it in the developer menu. Keep us informed if it works for your device, also how it effects the stand by time and performance. Thanks.

Instead of just turning off the developer options? Because I just unlocked the developer options and I was that by default, all features in there are switched off. Btw, thanks for all the infos.

AnonD-669417, 16 May 2017As I understand, you can only disable hw overlays only aft... moreWithout a hardware overlay every application that is displaying things on the screen will share video memory and will have to constantly check for collision and clipping to render a proper image, this can cost a lot of processing power. With a hardware overlay each application gets its own portion of video memory, getting rid of the need to check for collision and clipping.
                              Reference: https://www.quora.com/What-is-Disable-Hardware-Overlay-in-the-developer-option-of-Android

Disable it and the latency period for applications and the OS (any OS, not just Android) itself to render things will go way way up because it has to check to make sure it's not screwing with memory that is supposed to be dedicated to another task than its own. Hardware overlay ensures everyone has their own partition of memory so they don't have to do those checks and so latency to render things on the screen decreases dramatically.
If you're a windows user, it's typically done through using Directx. Linux desktops do it through the X Window System + OpenGL.
                              http://rootzwiki.com/topic/28977-disable-hardware-overlays/

So if you disable it, theoretically you will lose processing power quite a bit, probably some stand by time. But the flickering and white line issues will be gone hopefully. You can still disable it afterwards. We still need practical experiences from the owners of the phone.
Let us know the results, battery up time etc.

As I understand, you can only disable hw overlays only after you enable developer options. I guess it is enabled by default. So, I think, it is not the same thing.

For the ones who have the whiteline and screen flickering issues, have you tried the hw overlays disabling in the developer options menu? Asus had similar problems with zenfone 2, this is how they fixed the issue then.
                                      Here are the intructions;
Go to settings > About device.
Find "Build number" and click 6 times fast on it.
You will then get the message saying: "You are now a developer"
Come back to Home Screen, and then go back to Settings >Now you will see the "Developer Options"
Now go to Developer options >>Hardware accelerated Rendering Section >> Find "Turn off hardware overlays" or "disable hardware overlays" >> This will force the phone to always use GPU for screen compositingThis happens after a new update as phone can't decide between CPU and GPU for drawing on screen.
