The proximity centre also allows it to close entirely if dropped from high enough (1.25m) and if it's lower then it tries to avoid hitting the ground first, according to Engadgets article.

Nobody keeps their phone 8 years, which is maybe just maybe enough open and closes for the motor to wear out. If anything, the phone is glass and will get dropped and broken long before the camera.

Considering the cost of production of a near bezelless screen with a flip camera, why can't consumers accept a phone which would look like a ROG phone or Samsung galaxy S9. What's wrong with a phone if it has a head and a chin? What's wrong with a dog, if it has a tail? These motorized cameras either flip type or the pop up type definitely won't be durable in the long run.
