Behind the scenes look at how a Xiaomi 14 Ultra was used to film "Roma Noir"

Peter, 26 February 2024

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra is shaping up to be one of the most powerful phones for photography, but there’s a reason that Xiaomi has added a mode called “MasterCinema” (which records 10-bit Rec. 2020 HDR videos) - the phone has filmmaking ambitions too.

The company handed an Ultra to director Adam Bernstein, who has previously worked on Breaking Bad, Californication and others, along with cinematographer Sam Chase, known for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and others. They shot a new movie called Roma Noir: Triple Jeopardy using the phone.

Not just the phone – the new Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro 12.4 tablet has a feature called Director’s mode, which allows it to serve as a remote monitor for up to four Xiaomi 14 Ultras. This helped as the team used the phone on the move and got creative with its placement.

This was one of the features that they praised – since the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is smaller than a typical camera, it can get in tight places. They also mounted it to the sides of bikes and cars to get shots in motion, they even mounted it on a drone to get aerial footage.

The filmmakers also raved about the camera's adjustable aperture, shutter speed, the ISO controls, variable frame rate and so on. Here is a behind-the-scenes look at how Roma Noir was shot:

The full film will be released soon.

I never about having the "short" OS update, especially when people who buy phones through carriers always change it every year or two anyway.

Horrible pricing? Not in my country. In fact, both the Xperia 1 v and Xperia 5 v in my country is actually cheaper than both Apple's iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro with similar 256GB storage. Xiaomi isn't actually doing any better...
