onesmartwoman, 02 Jun 2010hey hi again.. I have started going thru this phone n i am ... moreSure, to update your device you'll need to download the OS from either a forum (I got mine from crackberry.com) or you could try the official BB website. I got my OS from crackberry, the version is 5.0.0.509 from Wind Hellas (Greece, you could go to blackberry site, choose Greece and then Wind Hellas and look for 8520). There is another version but from what I've read, games and other stuff disappear so I haven't tried them. When you download the software to your computer, open it (double click) to install it. When it installs, go to the folder it installed in (should be something like Common files/ResearchInMotion) and look for the Vendor.XML file. You could just do a search through your computer if you can't find the folder. When you find it, delete it. Then, from that same folder, open the Loader.EXE file. This will tell you to plug the phone to your computer. I turned off the internet on my laptop because some people said the program didn't read the new software because of the internet connection. Once you plug it in, it'll start to load. Press next when you need to and just let it do it's thing. It didn't take me more than 20 minutes to upgrade. Also, the software does a backup of everything but I still recommend doing a back up of your own using the Desktop Manager program.

blackberrian, 01 Jun 2010hey mates, first of all i want to say welcome to the club,... moreNice one...to sum it all... You want e-mail and messaging go for BB. You want e-mail + messaging + ease of use + all the things a phone can do without going deep ..go for Symbian. You want eye candy try iPhone and Android and finally if u rank yourself as the geeky one and love customization plus full fledged office functionality go for a WIndows mobile. I have a BB 8520 for msgng as all other BB specs of Bold 9700 etc are knocked to dust by my other Symbian(E-52) and WM(Omnia Pro B7610) phones. I did not go for iPhone as it is more of a fad for serious powerusers like me. Conclusively DECIDE what you want and READ the manual + prior posts on all phones before you guys start ranting on these forums....

blake, 01 Jun 2010hey,,all my life i used nokia phones becuz its eazy to uze,... morehey mates,
first of all i want to say welcome to the club,if u really have the guts to be a new blackberrian..hahaha..

but,u need to do/to know a few things such as,

1)make a good research about BB devices..NEVER EVER simply buying a thing (in this case - BB devices) w/out knowing a thing..

2)dont just buying a BB just becoz u see other peoples have one (so u also want one)..u need to know what is exactly u want from a devices..so,i suggest go to the nearest phone shop n play around with BB devices n get the "feel" or 'play' with ur frenz BB for a while to get some idea n how it works..so,u need to equip urself with a new technology..

3)BB is not complicated n yet not easy either..u need to learn more..but for beginners,u MUST HAVE AN IDEA what is BB is all about..

4)BB devices need a BIS or BES to function well (to get the best experience using it n also to get all the features that u should get as a BB owner)..

5)BIS is Blackberry Internet Service..it is a data package that allows u to connect to the Internet 24/7 without hassle..although this device doesnt has 3G,but no worries..the EDGE is strong already..it can load the page quickly like 2-3 seconds..

6)this device has wi-fi for u to use to connect to the internet for free..but u need to know if u use the wifi, the connection is damn limited (only connected while u in the wifi area) n u wont get the chance to get the push emails,n other notifications such as FB,YM n so on..u can view ur emails,FB or ym by going to the mobile site only..

7)BIS is important to any BB devices i can say..coz,w/out it - u cant get all the benefits u should get..u also not able to d/load the "portal to the 3rd parties apps" called BB apps World..then u cant d/load or install the FB for BB,BBM,YM n so on..so its sucks dude..

                          i hope thats help..

What a huge mistake buying this phone. All the features in the world, but GPRS speed most of the day. It's beyond me to think phones are still operating at these speeds. Camera takes photos at VGA quality.
