Canon EOS RP is a $1300 full frame mirrorless camera

Canon has announced the EOS RP, the second camera in the company's line of full frame mirrorless camera after the original EOS R launched last year.

EOS RP has the same RF mount as the EOS R

The EOS RP is a cheaper model and also happens to be the smallest full frame camera in Canon's history. Canon is pitching this as the full frame camera for the masses.

The EOS RP has a 26.2 megapixel full frame sensor, that is likely the same one used on the EOS 6D Mark II. It has an sensitivity of up to 40000 ISO for stills and 25600 for video. It can also do 5fps burst capture.

The camera has Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF system with a staggering 4779 manually selectable AF points and a focusing time of approximately 0.05 seconds with native lenses. It has 88% coverage and can focus down to EV -5. You also get focus peaking.

The EOS RP has a 0.39-type OLED EVF with 2.36M dots and 100% coverage along with a fully articulating 3.0-inch 1.04M dots LCD touchscreen.

EOS RP comes with an optional grip extender that attaches to the bottom

The camera uses the LP-E17 batteries and supports USB charging. Canon will optionally sell you a camera grip that attaches to the bottom and extends the height of the camera for a more comfortable grip. The EOS RP supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

The EOS RP has the same RF mount as the EOS R, so all the EOS R lenses are natively supported. You could also get one of the three adapters made by Canon, the standard Mount Adapter, which is included with the camera in some markets, the Control Ring Mount Adapter that lets you use the Control Ring feature found on RF lenses with any other lens, and the Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter, which lets you add filters.

Differences between the EOS R and EOS RP are several and some rather serious. While the EOS RP is smaller, it also lacks the weather sealing of the EOS R and also has a smaller battery. The EOS RP does not have the LCD on the top and also loses the touchpad on the back.

The sensor is obviously different, with the more expensive EOS R having a higher resolution 30.3 megapixel sensor. The EOS R can do 4K video at up to 30fps while the EOS RP can only do it up to 24fps. The EOS R also supports higher bit rates, 10-bit color and C-Log, which the EOS RP doesn't. More importantly, the Dual Pixel CMOS AF still works in 4K mode on the EOS R but doesn't on the EOS RP. Both have a crop in 4K but the EOS R does 720p at 120fps, which the EOS RP can't.

Priced at $1299 for the body and $2399 with the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM, the EOS RP is one of the most affordable ways to get into the full frame. However, that shouldn't be your only criteria to purchase a camera so make sure you wait for the reviews before taking the plunge.

Agreed. But atleast we should have 4 working modes which work good, without crop or anything and with sound. Why is a mobile phone like Samsung Note 9 more capable and all rounded in Videos, compared to a dedicated camera which costs high (not c...

It's infuriating how over priced lenses are. And how few actually have nice f1-2 lenses. Especially that are not limited to such a narrow view. Duh obviously that's in part to reserve sharpenness but is still bs

Why buy a premium Canon model with a new lens mount? Canon's best sensors are a decade old in abilities and modern cell phones aren't trailing too far behind. You only buy a Canon if you need lens compatibility.
