Google Maps 4.1 now available for Android, brings live wallpaper

18 March, 2010

Google Maps for Android version 4.1 has hit the Market and brings several improvements, a Google Latitude widget and a brand new live wallpaper. This update comes just over a month after v4.0 came out.

The search result page has been redesigned - it now fits more information on the screen and you can navigate back and forth between the results by swiping left and right.

When you install Google Maps for Android 4.1, a new widget becomes available - the Latitude widget - along with a new live wallpaper that puts the map on the homescreen and tracks your position. This sounds cool and all, but it may put a lot of strain on your battery.

The final tweak that comes with v4.1 of Google Maps is that if your Android phone is syncing with several Google accounts, you can pick which one Google Maps should use.

The update to Google Maps 4.1 is available to Android 1.6+ devices in the same countries and languages that Maps is currently available.

Yesterday, we saw Gesture Search released and it was for Androids 1.6+ too. Is v1.5 getting left in the dust?

This isn't to be put on T-Mobile USA. Motorola is the one that has to make the higher versions of Android work with the MotoBlur service. They should be releasing it sometime in Q2
