Pixel 6a user review: I don't know if it's the phone or the Android OS but my pixel 6a doesn't work worth a darn in many different areas . I suspect honestly that most of it has to do with the fact that the Android OS, while slicker than ever, is more flawed than ever regarding important features that don't work at all or work correctly. There are a number of issues that persist even after updates or get worse after updates
#1 these are all issues that I've never been able to resolve since I got the phone six months despite having spending several hours trying.
#2 I just found out that the notifications for the assistant on my phone are off and locked and cannot be turned back on. Also, a topic in google help on it is also locked without a useable solution having been posted!
#3 my 6a has no memory card slot and no way to upload my personal music files into my phone for playing on my car system. Supposedly, when plugging the phone's USB to a PC a notification is supposed to pop up in the top area to switch from "charging to "data transfer" but it doesn't and no one at Verizon or Google will help me beyond giving me the instructions on how to switch between functions, which I told them doesn't appear.
#4 the night and day themes come on at will whenever with no control even whether I have them set to automatic or manual.
#5 and this is with all windows and android based devices these days: there are no black fonts anymore, just medium grey to pale grey ones that range in difficult to see to nearly impossible.
#6 The voice to type function has gotten even less accurate far worse than it has been with pasts Android versions. The program seems to have NO "context" programing to allow it to pick correctly between simple words like "in" or "and" in a sentence, nor for practically any other language conjunction or connector words. There doesn't seem to be ANY programing in this app for the app to make choices based on any contextual reference in the sentence and I know for a fact that it could have and should have this ability for want of investment of time and money to make it better, not to mention respect for Android users.
#7 also introduced in this version is "smart punctuation" for voice to text typing that is horrendously bad and which cannot be disabled, reset, retrained or anything.

Disappointing... NOT AN EXCEPTION ANY MORE
Feels a major quality downgrade switching from a pixel3 dying after almost 4 years or even to my 1st gen. motoX...
The same beloved core features for many years with no genuine innovation but getting bulkier, heavier, strange trends for ergonomics, fingerprint unlock issues and overall much less of a quality user experience...Maybe better CPU/GPU scores to kill "screen" time and to boost data mining (aka AI) tricks, but not a reference as a minimalist clever device any more...Would rather buy a pixel3 device with software updates...
After 1 week of use, switching to an asus zenfone8 that technically feels much more a successor of past pixels in terms of values except the more limited future software update period.

Longtime Google fan-boy, but they really fell down on this one...
If you are looking for a top-notch camera that technically functions as a smartphone then this is the product for you!
However...if you need your phone to do super fancy stuff like produce sound above a whisper at max volume, either through it's speaker or it's Bluetooth output, then you might want to buy literally any other phone, lol...also, for some reason they omitted the most(only) useful Gesture from this device...no chop-chop flashlight...this is definitely the last Google phone I use unless they get a grip on the basics.
10/10 for camera
5/10 for battery
-10/10 for lack of speaker/Bluetooth audio
0/10 for lack of flashlight function (no chop-chop)
1.5/10 OVERALL. ...and that kind of charity should be tax-deductible...

Got mine for ~USD323, which I think is the right price on first half of 2023. IMHO, the launch price is too $ even though every Youtuber was hyping it up. I'm coming from Huawei P50 Pro and before that an Asus Zenfone 8.
The Pixel 6a's OS and UI are smooth. Speakers are not bad, not the best nor the worst. It's just slightly worse than the P50 Pro.
The display white balance is slightly warm to my taste and there is no way to change it. Luckily, human eyes will get accustomed to it after a while, as long as you don't use another phone with blue-ish white balance display. I suspect the display is a low end OLED ones where the fill rate is not as high as higher end phones. Texts appear slightly fuzzy if you put it side by side with a high end phone. Nevertheless, at this price, I cannot fault it.
The fingerprint sensor is really lousy. It is not working (even in setting up fingerprints) if your hand is too dry (after using hands sanitizer). This is the weakest part of this phone.
The camera is good for the price but make no mistake, it is no match to flagships phones like P50 Pro. What mkbhd shootout didn't reveal is full resolution of each image and also how long it took to shoot in low lights. Flagship phones would just snap away like it's daylight whilst the 6a will takes a few seconds if it's too dark. Again, at this price, I cannot fault it at all. The 6a is still better than the Zenfone 8 on all front, minus the fingerprint scanner.
