Google's Daydream View VR headset will support Cardboard soon

Vlad, 10 November 2016

Before it unveiled Daydream and the Daydream View headset, Google's push into VR was called Cardboard. This consisted of a simple and cheap headset design, an actual cardboard headset made by Google, as well as an app ecosystem for Android. While the first two of those have been superseded by the release of the Daydream View (which is available today), what about the Cardboard apps? Do they run on the Daydream View?

At the moment, the answer is no, apparently, because the Cardboard app can't yet use the View's controller. It does, however, already recognize that you have a Daydream View. And the good news is that the incompatibility won't last long.

Ausdroid found out that Google's Cardboard team is working on making Cardboard work with the Daydream View and its controller. In the coming weeks, the company will release a new VR SDK which will include an API for using the Daydream View controller as the Cardboard button. From that point on, all apps designed with Cardboard in mind should start working in the Daydream View without a hitch. It obviously would have been nice to have this integration ready for the View's launch, but at least it's on the way.
