HTC U Play debuts with 5.2" 1080p screen

Yordan, 12 January 2017

The wait is over - HTC finally revealed its new handsets - HTC U Ultra and HTC U Play. The first is a 5.7" phablet which we already told you about.

The HTC U Play is a smaller and slightly more accessible device. Its 1080p screen stretches at 5.2 inches and comes with HTC Sense Companion. It’s an AI assistant that comes with 4 Always-on active microphones that will help you unlock your phone with voice commands, manage your battery use to reflect your daily patterns and make suggestions about your agenda.

But let’s talk about about the design - HTC U Play has a body that seamlessly matches an aluminum back and glass front. It’s bigger sibling U Ultra has a limited edition sapphire glass, but U Play will lack such version.

And there’s something else that is lacking - the 3.5mm jack. HTC promises personalized sound experience through USonic technology that has built-in microphones in the earbuds that “listen” for sonic pulses and adjusts audio to match your ears’ unique architecture.

The HTC U Play has the rather dated Mediatek Helio P10 chipset at its heart and a 2,500 mAh battery to keep it going.

There is going to be two versions of the Play - one with 32GB storage and 3GB RAM and another with 64GB and 4GB. The two cameras on the smartphone have 16MP resolution BSI sensors with 1 µm pixels and F/2.0 aperture. The primary one also throws in OIS in the mix.

Unfortunately the U Play doesn't match the U Ultra in the software department either, shipping with Android Marshmallow 6.0.

We are yet to hear anything on the pricing and launch dates of the HTC U Play.
