raymond, 21 Sep 2008what chinese software can i install ? n when can i find it ?@raymond - I would highly recomment you (and in fact - to anyone using a Windows Mobile device) to register at the http://forum.xda-developers.com/ and check the vast amount of tips, hints and general data about everything concerning the PocketPCs and Smartphones.

In particular there are numerous Chinese software developers and users that post their opinions there so you will be able to find a pretty good number of programs you may need. To start with, the last week a guy from Hong kong released a custom ROM (in Chinese) the seems much faster than the original. Just to a search in the proper sub-forums.

lucifer, 18 Sep 2008What's the diference: ARM 11 369 Mhz or Marvell PXA270 52... more@lucifer - I think that you are trying to compare the incomparable :) The ARM 11 CPU is used in Symbian devices, while the PXA270 - in Windows Mobile ones. Both CPUs suit very well the demands of the respective operating system and if you try to compare similar tasks - GPS navigation, media playback using TCPMP, popular 3D games you will get, in average, similar test results.

At the same time since there is no way to upgrade a Symbian device to a newer OS version, while it is considered 'a piece of cake' to flash a different (customized/'cooked') version of Windows Mobile to a PXA270 device IMO the latter CPU is superior bringing to the user the freedom and flexibility to adjust the core of the PDA system to suit one's needs. Again we are speaking here about complex quality of both OS and CPU as something unseparable. And again - WindowsMobile + xScale CPU seems better FOR AN ADVANCED USER.

omega, 16 Sep 2008can anyone tell me what are the issues that is faced by thi... moreThe known issues with iPAQ 610/612/614 are not that much and (IMHO) for any of them there is a solution, patch or workaround available. Here is a brief list of my findings:

Problem: Battery life is low (less that 1 day)
Solution: Install the HP Power Management Patch available from the official HP site

Problem: Performance seems not so good for a 512MHz Intel CPU
Workaround: Install the custom made ROM by the Russion guy with the nickname . NOTE: Do this on your risk! This worked VERY well for me but I do not take any responciblity for any damage you may cause to your device!
Tip: Install the custom ROM only AFTER you have patched your original ROM with the PowerManagement update from HP!

Problem: The phone lock/unlock software is very clumsy.
                          Solution: Install the freeware S2U2 (Slide-To-Unlock 2) - a very flexible locker/unlocker+screensaver+clock+alarm clock

Problem: The GPS seems very slow.
Tip: Install the freeware Quick-GPS that reads sattelite coordinates for the next 168 hours and helps a LOT to avoid the 10-15 minutes ColdStart time for the GPS. Having it constantly updated reduced the starting time for my GPS (I'm using the iGO 8 software) to less that a minute.

Problem: The sound level of the incoming rings is very low - I'm missing calls because of that.
Explanation: Once the slider of the sound volume is adjusted to the MAX the sound level is (IMO) more than sufficient to be clearyl heard at 10ft in a noisy room. The thing that may prevent the sound to be loud and clear enough is a designers' fault where HP had positioned the loudspeaker on the back of the phone in such a way that if you place the phone face up on a table the loudspeaker is fully blocked and the sound can't pass around. The obvious solution is either to leave the phone face down on a table or to have a belt case with a pin on the back which lifts the phone about 1/4 of an inch above the table and the ringtones a heard wihtout any problem.

Problem: I'm missing the joystick of the other PDA-s - I can't play games with the Wheel.
Tip: OK - the phone is nicknamed "Business Navigator", not "Gamers' something". The Wheel is great for single-handed operation and useless as a gaming option. Nevertheless there plenty of KEYS here that most of the other PDA-s do not have and these keys can be easily mapped to simulate an 8-directional pad. I'll recommend the usage of AE_Button_Plus.

Problem: When I press the OK hardware button or the (OK) soft button on my screen, the current program is only minimized and not closed as in 'normal' Windows.
Explanation: This is a feature of WindowsMobile designed so in order to speed up the leading of your mostly used applications... on the VERY slow machines some 5 years back from now. Unfortunately this obsolete software design is still kept by MS (may be for compatibility reasons).
Solution: The good news is that there are numerous 3rd party task managers capable of switching the OK button to do what is expected. I would recommend the freeware MagicButton

Problem: The built-in MS InternetExplorer lacks many features present in most modern browsers.
Solution: Go for Opera Mobile 9.xx - no doubt at this moment this is the best browser for WinMobile PDAs

Problem: The built-in File Explorer lacks many features...
Solution: There is a number of 3rd party software solutions adding powerful FileManagers to your system. I would recommend Resco File Explorer 2005 or newer - a package that not only adds a File Explorer, but also a Registry Editor, FTP client and encription module.

Problem: The built-in Windows Media Player is limited to WMV, WMA and MP3 files. How to play AVI, MPG, OGG, FLV, etc.?
Solution: Just install the freeware TCPMP (short for The Core Pocket Media Player). The package contains codecs for playback of almost all currently used multimedia containers and streaming video, plus visualisztion of lyrics for MP3 and subtitles (in SMI format) for your movies. Plus - there had been added a plug-in to watch the 'true' youtube.com videos and not the ones from the mobile version of this popular site.

Problem: My wired handsfree got broken and and replacement from HP is just too expensive.
Tip: Yes, I agree the HP handsfree is well overpriced. So overpriced that for the same money you can buy a good BT Stereo headset from Plantronics, Jabra or Siemens and use the VERY good A2DP Bluetooth profile of your iPAQ.

Problem: My 4/8/16GB SDHC memory card does not hold properly my data and software.
Tip: Not all brands of SDHC cards are certified by HP and for a reason. Simply avoid uncertified brands like Kingston and stick to well known and certified ones like A-Data and you will have not troubles with that.

Thanks for the tips, I got a Scandisk (now I know why the HP612c was NOT listed in the ref files when I bought it at Comex). Trancend is diff to get here and A-Data is not heard off.

One thing I must say for the 612C is that it is a PAIN to remove the data card

1&2 Two possible reasons for the misbehavior of your 8GB SDHC card come to mind:
First - your card is of a brand that is not approved by HP and is really incompatible with the hardware of 612c. One such brand is Kingston, some negative reports about SunDisk had been received too. Stick to Transcend and A-Data to avoid any trouble.
The other possible reason may be that your card had been formatted in NOKIA smartphone or a card-reader that does not support the true FAT32 data structure that is required by the HP firmware. The solution here is obvious - install any proven SD-card formatting utility on your iPAQ and try to format the faulty card. I would suggest Resco File Explorer or SKTools.

As for the backup utility - such utility is not included natively in the HP devices since WM5. At the same time there is no problem to install and use some 3rd party software, which will be a far more flexible and reliable solution. I can suggest here SPB Backup and again SKTools as some very good backup solutions.
