Tones, tones of apps, it all depends on, WHAT YOU want to do with it.

App Manager Pro -> Worth the $$
Better Terminal Emulator Pro -> Really useful is you have it rooted like i did
Autostart, BookmarkBR, Bubble, connect bot, gscript, log collector, My backup pro(Useful), Root booter, SUFBS (one of the best File Manager), Task panel, Yellowbook (for US i think, there is another one in the market..............

I can go on on , n on, then again, it depends on what you want it to do for you.

I like to play World Attack -> Funnny, nice...
Andoku for sudoku ....
Lots of other games, i have chess, and a few others

As for my opinion, been using this phone for a couple of weeks now and I am very happy with it. I know lots of people are complaining about the lag, but honestly its not so much of a problem. Furthermore, there will be a new ROM available from HTC(soon I hope) which you can easily upgrade to.
I was watching this video in youtube on 3GS vs the Hero and I have to say that I kinda disagree with the comments. Now, I am a big fan of the Iphone but decided to get the Hero instead.
Let's make it this way. Both phones are using widgets. 3GS has a faster processor than the Hero which obviously makes it faster. But, 3GS do tends to freeze a lot especially after downloading lots of applications on it. Even with its 16GB; which to me, is more frustrating than having a lagging phone. You can see it in the video on how the 3GS would freeze.
Now, the rival allows you to only scroll to the left and right. Click on the widget to launch applications. Which in my thoughts, should never have lags or having a freeze at all. But as for the Hero, the widgets are actually "Live". And it combines both widgets and Touchflo which makes the phone more fun. This contributes to the "minor" lags which I have to say that I can find in the 3GS itself.
Do ask yourself what sort of phones you would really want to have before getting one. As for me, it will be awhile before I'll change my Hero with another phone.

Anonymous, 17 Sep 2009judging by your input, Hero is inches away from perfection.... moreTrue. In the end, it all depends on you and what you really like. You gonna be shelling out all that $$$$ anyways for a device.

The perfect device... there are none.
                              But the hero is solid

So I'm waiting for 1.6 version of Android then. It has emerged in that 4.3" phone, hope it's not gonna be too long befora they released it in smaller size phone.
I always think that 3.2" is the nost comfy if you look from different aspects. Hero would definitely be my choice if it were good in video.
Anyway I have 1 more consideration about resale value of htc phone (in my country at least). Even if you want to sell it after only few months of usage, the preice fell off dramatically. I've been warned by my friend. That why I need "perfect" htc phone, because I don't want to get dissapointed and want to sell it! Not like Nokia or even apple, their price has to be admitted, more steady.

User experience is rich and fun, and i mean that when in every sense of it. Lots of apps available in the android market. It integrates very well with Google and other social networks. Virtual Keyboard is second to none.

The device itself is not bad in regards to features, looks, and feel. However, there are some minuses, no built in Radio, no physical keyboard (Virtual Keyboard is fantasTIC!), 64K color, 512MB Internal(External Storage expandable), No flash(don't bother taking picture in the dark or at night), bad video recording... http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_hero-review-382.php

So if don't care for these disadvantages, then you gonna like the Hero. I was going to get the N97 myself, but Hero won me over. Check youtube, watch some video of the hero, you'll know if you really want, or not. Some reviews complains about it being laggy, well, thats ancient history. New ROM fixed lag
