ive had the htc hero for a week
the htc website already have a rom update for the phone which is really easy to do, after the update the phone works like a charm no more laggy video or the phone responding slow its pretty good now

There is an app in the Android market that let you play . But the file will have to be uploaded...... Not too sure on details, but I believe converting and copying is still a better choice.
Hopefully, there will be an android version of mplayer and maybe coreplayer.

Over the last few months I have used the following phones for a couple of weeks each:
HTC Touch Pro
Samsung Jet
Nokia E71
Nokia N97
But the HTC Hero beats all of the above hands-down. The best phone I have used so far. You can't go wrong buying this.

Sister had the new Magic and the built in microphone is quite poor. Unlike Nokia and Motorola phones that have noise cancellation built in so the other party hears your calls clearly without all the background noise this HTC device does not have it so the other person on the other end is not going to be very happy when you call him from a public place.
