one thing thats very important and is always never mentioned. In fact it is only GSMarena that consider this spec, is the screen to body ratio. The M9 ratio @ 68% is poor. The best flagships last year had 70%+ LGG3 and Nexus 6 for example.

Htc tried to make a good looking phone but spoiled all that when they designed m8 and m9 with odd sized dual speaker ports. M7, one max and the upcoming e9 are the most beautiful dual speaker phones of htc right now which have same sized speaker ports and sound almost as good as m8. htc shouldn't have compromised on the looks for improving sound quality rather make improvements in the circuitry.If they can't they shouldn't do it by making ugly changes in the exterior design of the phone.If that's so not just htc any company can make a better sounding phone than m8 and m9 only thing is that the exterior design may look more ugly. Other brands like sony Z3 and Moto G2 have same size speaker ports at equal distances on both side of the display, so they look beautiful.

Using a 1440p screen in s6 is already proven bad... The s6's battery life is nearly 20hrs less than s5 and about 10hs less than m8 with roughly same capacity of battery... M9 naturally with a higher battery capacity will easily win in the battery life department
