Hey folks,
Thought I'd post 'an aside' for those interested. I've been considering getting this phone for a while as it's the closest to what I'm looking for - ie., has 3G *and* GPS (even tho' it's not 'officially' on this model). As a double aside, the GPS itself is the Qualcomm chipset - capable of 12 channels. The P3300 is better for GPS as it's using SiRF GSC3 SiRFstarIII™ which is capable of 20 channels.
However, I was also hoping for something with a keyboard but which still comes in at less than 18mm. And, on the wishlist was a flash to go with the camera. So, with all that in mind, I happened to find this:
HTC P4550 - available from June
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=733
(cut and paste into browser as clicking links seems to bring you back here)
...58 x 110 x 18mm in size, 2.8mp camera *with* flash , keyboard *and* tilt-up display! Oh, and 3G and GPS of course (GPS is NMEA 0183 chipset - unfortunately I know nothing about it).
I'm gonna try and hold out 'til June.
PS. *Thank you* GSMArena for this *non-registration* forum where we can quickly share knowledge and opinion without the hassle of registration to get in the way.

Does anybody still have the dopod ROM for the gps? I think dopod changed their site recently requiring you to have purchased their phone before allowing you to download the new ROM. I would appreciate it if you could send me the file at throw2u@hotmail.com Thanks

Go to www.dopodasia.com to upgrade to new ROM version 1.23 with GPS activation. You need Active Sync 4.5 first which is the latest version .
GPS activiation is free but you need to buy the maps etc . You can download Google Maps into this PDA phone too.

HTC will come out with an "official" updated ROM for the p3600 "soon", i'd wait for that instead of using the Dopod ROM. From what i read so far, to update, all you need to do is sync up your phone to your computer and double click the ROM and that's all you need to do. i never done it myself, so you might want to ask around.

Is a ROM update something you can do on your own at home? And where do you get the new ROM in first place? (If it's illegal, post "it's illegal" - I'm just wondering). Thanks

Can anybody tell me what's up with the links in this list? They always direct me back to gsmarena.com instead of the original page...

Alright, let me get this straight:
The P3600 "Trinity" does have GPS capability, however in most cases it is disabled so far. But as I saw today, Vodafone Germany is preparing the launch of the GPS version for the first quarter of this year. Here's the link for those of you who speak German: http://www.teltarif.de/arch/2007/kw04/s24639.html

Thanks Dopod fans,
I read that the official HTC ROM update will be released in a few weeks. I'll wait for that. I was asking about the GPS software, but everything i read so far is that there is NO GPS software pre-installed such as TomTom or Garmin.

HTC P3600 (Dopod D810) has a GPS, all you need to do is download the ROM to activate the GPS hardware, for more info http://www.dopodasia.com/promotion/d810_gps/index.html

Ive had quite a number of pda phones in the past and i can say that the biggest problem ive had with them are:1)poor reception 2)poor battery life 3)slow processor. Is this phone good or even excellent at these categories? Can someone who had the P3600 tell me their view on this?As far as features I can say that this is one of the best in the market right now.My other question is how efficient is the dialling function on this since it doesnt have querty keyboard?Really very interested to get one.

Does this phone have a GPS software installed? what program is it? or do we have to install our own program such as TomTom or do we select which maps to installed? are the maps saved on the phone's hard drive or the mini SD card?
Thanks
