To everyone using this phone - I don't want to put the 'fear of the devil' into you all, but in case you've not yet read, there is a (potential) security vulnerability in using the Y300.

Essentially, phones like the Y300 running Jelly Bean version 4.1.1 are now a problem for users, as usernames/passwords can apparently be hacked from them.

This (along with many other articles) explains why:
Heartbleed: 50m Android phones may be affected, report shows http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/heartbleed-50m-android-phones-may-be-affected-report-shows-9263155.html

Things I've either already done / intend doing:
1. Deleted any GMail, Twitter, Facebook accounts I had on the phone, whether an account I setup or via a browser.

2. Checked my phone for a security update - there was nothing up to last night.

3. Checked their website for a security update - the only file they have is the original JB 4.1.1 ROM.

3. Tweeting @Huawei - PLEASE DO THE SAME ; THEY NEED TO BE BOMBARDED WITH TWEETS TO RELEASE A FIX ASAP - to ask them when they're going to release a patch to fix this security breach (I read that Google have done what they need to in this regard, and now it's up to the manufacturers to release something OTA or a downloadable file).

4. If no response via Tweets, please consider E-mailing them within the next week ; search their website "huawei media contacts" - these are the only email addresses I could find ; they also need to receive enough emails (if they ignore Tweets) requesting a fix so they bother doing something soon, else they'll drag their feet.

We shouldn't be vulnerable, because they can't be bothered in even communicating with the scores of people who have bought this phone.

If anyone knows of any communication by them indicating a fix (which I doubt would've happened so soon) please post something here (with reference/s) to that effect. (nothing in the "News" on this website, regarding this, as I've just looked).

AnonD-253982, 14 Apr 2014how mych Ram do you guys have left im experiencing serious ... moreI have 713MB still available for applications.

I've not downloaded too many apps, though - just essential ones. Have you put a MICRO SD card into your phone yet? (preferably get Sandisk, IMO). I have an 8GB card to which I send all mp3's / mp4's / podcasts, and as many other apps as the developers have allowed for, given the phone's not rooted (now).

If you don't yet have a card, buy one & move what you can across - that'll free-up memory. Also, put Clean Master (& CM Security) onto the phone so you can easily boost the RAM, clear cache, free-up memory.

I did root it on the weekend, to see if I could move ALL apps across, but Chrome (which takes up about 80MB in Internal) wouldn't budge. The SD-card needs to be partitioned, apparently, for that to work, but I couldn't be bothered at that stage - reverted back to non-root.

Finally, I get quite a bit of "app isn't installed" error messages when the phone's been idle for quite some time - don't know if it's a lack of RAM or simply incompatibility issue, but just restart phone when it happens.

kam, 12 Apr 2014does the HUAWEI Y300 use QWERTY touch screen key pad?I ran out of time to edit my post, but wanted to adjust/add to the top:

It uses the standard QWERTY keyboard to which you refer. I don't use it personally, but have looked within the settings - seems to use the Android keyboard (built-in) to which you can tick option for "Huawei Input Method" ; if you buy the phone go to Settings - Language & input - then adjust settings in each of these by ticking in the box & touching the wheel on the right.

However, recommend you change to another free one from the store, based on my original post.

kam, 12 Apr 2014does the HUAWEI Y300 use QWERTY touch screen key pad?It probably uses the standard QWERTY keyboard to which you refer.

Although I have the phone, I switched almost immediately to using the FREE "TouchPal X Keyboard" from the Google Play store. Virtually any other free keyboard from the Play store should be superior to the standard one that's built into the phone, so try them out.

Another good one is "MultiLing" which has numerous options for keypad layout. Just search for 'free keyboard' on Google Play.

In fact, I'm thinking of trying out Perfect Keyboard next.

Loula , 12 Apr 2014hi can someone please advice on switching sim cards I just ... moreYou can use any SIM from any network. Technically you should have no problems.

The only issue you might have is if the phone becomes faulty (after 1-year) & you take it in for a repairs.

MTN will have wanted you to of used their SIM in the phone & if they pick up that you haven't it's probable you'll only get the 1st-year manufacturer's warrantee/guarantee. (MTN these days are supposed to cover the phone for repairs in the 2nd year, but using a Voda. SIM could make that null & void).

You'll probably need to take it in to where bought, but issue with that is that after 4 months, they'll take the phone in & who knows when you'll get it back. Maybe phone the store to check the turnaround time/s.

Anonymous, 09 Apr 2014I want to buy this phone .wont it give me problems?Possible you'll find a few things that irritate you about this phone. For me, the lack of memory & fact that when I switch it on after some time, it sometimes says an app that I want isn't installed. I then have to restart the phone to get that app to start working, which takes about 1 minute, so not terrible.

Apart from these few things, it's overall good value for money.

Opened the app, pressed the red button on bottom-left, then same button to stop, and bottom-right button to playback. Hope it helps, but seems to me that you're looking for much more, in terms of quality of recording required.

However, if you want a better keyboard, download TouchPal X (free) from Google Play, and make it your default keyboard, also in the Keyboard & input methods page, once downloaded.
Overall, you should find it to be far better at text prediction, but you can choose your settings under "Smart input" which includes options to enable/disable Word & Sentence gestures + Contextual prediction.

Try it out - nothing to lose.
