It is extreme overkill for such a small display, as it only manages to drain the battery even faster, with very little to 0 noticeable change in sharpness on a small screen. The ability to record 4K is so it is capable of outputting onto a Computer with a 4K display beautifully, or onto a 4K TV, where it actually matters.
The current trend of QHD (2160p...half of 4K) displays are honestly, maxed out on what the human eye can perceive on a small screen...The only true benefit of 4K on a phone display is VR...that's about it.
Huawei has stuck with 1080p as they firmly believe even QHD is a waste, because the output is barely noticeable on a small screen, and even that serves to just be a battery drain.

I am Mate 7 Monarch edition and P9 Plus Huawei User, and In the past, I hoped Mate 9 will has :
- Display : 1440 x 2560 pixels (~515 ppi pixel density) "not 1080 x 1920 pixels (~373 ppi)"
- Screen-to-body ratio : over 78%
- Front Camera : 12 MP with 4K
- Ram : 6GB
- Room : 128GB
- Battery Life : Should Longer then Mate 8
- Real Multitask

Thats a lot for a phone with 4... moreI own the mate 7 and I still haven't received an official update, although their are means of manually updating to lollipop. The biggest let down of Huawei phones in my opinion is the software, which is restrictive and occasionally slow. I'm not a fan of emui.
