Infinix Zero Flip review

Two 50MP sensors, wide and ultrawide lenses

The Zero Flip has a trio of 50MP cameras - two on the cover and another one inside. The rear combo includes a wide primary unit and an ultrawide sidekick (so no telephoto, though you probably shouldn't be expecting one), while the selfie unit has a set of capabilities that few can rival.

The main camera on the back relies on a tried and tested Samsung sensor and it's not a bad size either, with a 1/1.57" optical format. The ultrawide uses a Hynix imager (similar size to that on the selfie cam), and it has an autofocusing lens, so not too shabby at all.

The selfie camera, on the other hand, is based on the ubiquitous Samsung JN1 sensor. This camera also has autofocus, and there's even an LED light to go with it. We'd say that the selfie setup is looking like somewhat of an overkill on a handset that lets you easily capture selfies with the 'main' camera, but having better hardware all around can't hurt, can it.

  • Wide (main): 50MP Samsung ISOCELL GN5 (1/1.57", 1.0µm-2.0µm), f/1.9, 23mm, multi-directional PDAF, OIS; 4K@30fps
  • Ultrawide: 50MP Hynix Hi5022 (1/2.8", 0.64µm-1.28µm), f/2.5, 23mm, PDAF; 4K@30fps
  • Front: 50MP Samsung ISOCELL JN1 (1/2.76", 0.64µm-1.28µm), f/2.2, 14mm, PDAF; 4K@60fps

Of course, you can expect the usual clamshell capabilities when it comes to camera operation - overhead shooting, waist-level shooting, rear-camera selfies, there's even the camcorder-style video capture mode.

Daylight photo quality

Main camera

Daylight photos from the Zero Flip's main camera are quite good. The overcast weather we've been having recently didn't do it any favors, but the phone still managed to capture a wide dynamic range in its shots, and did very well with color reproduction. On a pixel level, detail is generally good, but has a somewhat heavily processed character to random textures - not necessarily the worst offender in this respect though, mind you.

The 2x zoom results are also not half bad. There's some softening in the foliage, sure, but overall the detail levels remain respectable.

Ultrawide camera

The ultrawide camera's results are more into the 'excellent' category in our book. There may be a bit of grain in the images, but there's a ton of detail and sharpness is great all the way to the corners. Colors are on point and dynamic range is hard to fault as well.

Selfies

Selfies are also pretty spectacular on the Zero Flip, even if we don't necessarily quite understand the dedicated effort into the internal camera of a clamshell foldable. These have excellent detail, pleasing skin tones, and wide dynamic range.

Low-light photo quality

Main camera

In the dark, the Zero Flip takes pretty great shots too. The main camera exposes well and dynamic range is excellent, getting you well developed shadows without sacrificing the highlights. On a pixel level, we're looking at a bit more noise than ideal, but the detail is quite natural and there's plenty of it.

2x shots aren't quite as exciting when examined from up close, their detail looking a bit sketchy. Dynamic range and color remain great though, so at modest magnifications these shots are also very much usable.

Ultrawide camera

The ultrawide's photos in the dark are somewhat soft and noisy, and at least part of that is down to the phone's tendency to expose brighter than it needs to. Detail is still quite alright and we don't necessarily mind the brightness boost, though. Overall, not a bad result, it's just that we'd shift the balance of processing towards a little darker and potentially sharper images.

Video recording

The Zero Flip records video up to 4K30 with both of its cover cameras, and they can also do 1080p at 60fps, if you're after high frame rate capture. Interestingly enough, the internal camera is capable of 4K at 60fps.

You can check out the playlist below, which includes multiple video samples.

Video sample playlist

Main camera footage from the Zero Flip is fairly good. Dynamic range and colors are looking great, it's just that detail isn't quite as sharp as we'd like. Similarly, the ultrawide's global properties are hard to fault, while detail is a bit softer than ideal, though not too bad as ultrawides go.

In the dark, the main camera's clips are brightly exposed and have very good dynamic range and accurate colors. Detail is pretty noise in the shadows, however.

Stabilization isn't the best if you're trying to shoot while walking, but you can count of nicely stable footage when you're standing in one place just pointing the phone at your subject.

Why all flip phones use the cheap mediocre OLED screens? I want a flip phone with excellent IPS LCD screen! Come on!
