Torino, 14 Oct 2021Is this EVER going to actually launch in the UK though??Probs not, the "Xiaoxin Pad" series is exclusive to China, with the "Tab P11" series is the global equivalent but the Pro didn't get the SD870 update unfortunately.

        Views needed, from someone who's hopefully impartial and informed - Lenovo Pad Pro or Xiaomi Pad 5??

        They seem to be pretty similar - but screen quality is v.important to me.

          This is my review of the tablet by using it for more than a month.
          *Screen - great at mid to high brightness but at low brightness, you can see gray colors looked washed and spotty. Its not as good as samsung but better than an ips screen because of better contrast and real black colors. If your going dark mode, always use the amoled black theme not the gray theme like google's implementation. Supports HDR and dolby vision but netflix doesnt seems to support it. It ran at 1080p though so that's good. HDR works on youtube.

          *Body - aluminum body. Feels premium. Very thin but because it is big it would get uncomfortable holding it for long periods of time. I use a case most of the time so the "premium" in it doesn't really matter much.

          *Battery - Can last me a day during weekends where I almost use it constantly with a mix of gaming, youtube, movie watching, scrolling thru social media and reading comics. Battery life really is great especially when just reading. Charging is just fine. About 2-3 hours to fully charge but it is fine with me because i feel that battery degradation is lessened with a lower wattage of charging. There is also a setting where you can maintain battery at between 40-60% which is useful when you are always plugged in.

          *Software- there is NO global rom yet of this device. It runs zui which is the chinese software of lenovo. Languages available are only chinese and english. The english translation is hit or miss. Yes it run google playstore but nearby sharing is non existent. Yes it is widevine L1 but some video steaming platforms treat it as L3. Most bloatware and chinese apps can be uninstalled or disabled. Some running services, I disabled using adb. There is a pc mode. I just tested it but never used again. You can't also use a third party launcher because recents wont work. Also don't disable the gallery because it uses it to set wallpapers. I don't use the facial recognition but I hear it's crap. The fingerprint sensor works great for me. I registered the same finger twice so it read it better.

          *Performance - I played titan quest and nba 2k20 in this at the highest settings. They worked great. Sometimes there are dips but they are barely noticeable. Multi tasking is also good. If you set it up properly, multiple apps can run in the background and not be killed. (In the security app, disable the app cleaner and killer.)

          *Sounds - Great. Better than any phone that I owned.

I expect most of the comments on this forum are not from users but also impressions from a few amateur reviewers as well as pervasive direct and indirect marketing sources. Xiaomi does make interesting products and often has a value driven feature set at attractive price points. Their new pad falls in that category after a long absence from that space. But they are not considered top notch or top quality producers in their home market, more of a let's brand and sell everything under the sun (and I really do mean everything) and see what sticks for as long as it does. Support is not a high priority, product turnover numbers are. You certainly don't see the huge range of tech and non-tech products of a Xiaomi coming from Lenovo, or most other Chinese phone companies. On the phone and consumer tech engineering side, Lenovo has become much more focused, going through somewhat of a transition from trying to cover many different and disparate product and performance levels, to offering fewer and more specifically targeted offerings. The values that are part of the commercial products side (think Thinkpads) seem to now have also been accepted, at least in part, by the consumer divisions. This translates to a really strong emphasis on keeping products in use longer, adding to their value, rather than making them annually disposable and much more emphasis on pushing out OS and app updates when they are considered stable, rather than expecting users to be beta or marketing testers. I don't work there and I don't sell either company's products but I do use and track tech from China, and somewhat globally. Lenovo has been an interesting company to watch, as has Xiaomi, but they each have very different approaches to building their businesses and that is, to a great extent, reflected in the products they offer.

I own a Pad Pro and have spent about half an hour with the Xiaomi pad - the Lenovo model is clearly a step up in build and user experience quality. Part of that impression might be that the Lenovo screen is more appealing in actual use, but I haven't seen any of the slow or incorrect functioning you allude to either. Lenovo has really stepped up its OS/firmware implementations and function/security updating in the last couple of years. Personal experience has been that Lenovo's Chinese/English ROMs are now OS updated a minimum of two full Android versions with multiple function and security updates provided along the way. The Pad Pro is still a new device but, for example, the now two year old Z6 Pro phone series with the ZUI Chinese/English ROM has been updated From Android 9 through 11 over the past two years with a number of function added incremental updates along the way. Low and mid-level devices and Global/ROW models are less likely to get that continuing refinement (true for almost all Chinese manufacturers by the way) but the Pad Pro series is not in that category. Ultimately, we should buy devices that serve a specific purpose, particularly the ability to run the apps that we rely on and not expect any OS updating other than whatever security updates Google might push out. App functionality and app updating is much more likely to affect a user experience than OS platform changes that might break an app.

                      works about 70% of the time, it won't get updates for as long, it's less durable (most likely), & it's Wi-Fi only. That said; these 2 are still probably the best android tablets around.

Your device is NOT the version being discussed here. You should go to that model's discussion page to find out if your device will get an update to Android 11. Or better yet, go to Lenovo and see if there is an update scheduled for your pad, more likely to get a response there.

                                  I have a Lenovo pad pro 730 G and have not yet got Android 11 with ZUI 12.5 .
