LG GT540 Optimus

I went to an O2 (UK)store to have a look at the Optimus (a working version not a dummy), and I don't know what was wrong with it, but it wasn't all that responsive, which was disappointing. What also disappointed me was the soft display screen, it felt like a gel bag (shame it wasn't glass), Im worried that anything sharp passing on it could rip through it. And also the now Out-dated Android OS 1.6.
The Optimus is the cheapest phone out there packed with features except for what I mentioned above so far; however I don't want to buy a phone that won't last a long time and has no after support/ updates from the company.
If this phone gets an upgrade to Android 2.1/2.2 I may consider buying this phone, but I got a reply from LG to say that they can't see any upgrades coming for the future because the phone has just been newly released (yeah, it new, but with an out-dated OS!).
By the way, I read that resistive touch screens can't do multi-touch (Android 2.2 supports multi-touch/pinch & zoom), so maybe LG are right, the Optimus can't be upgraded to 2.2!

also, make sure you have the o2 tariff "Text & Web" if you are on pay and go on o2, this way you get texts and net, so no credit should be eaten with apps, as you get 500meg or so monthly allowance for net usage.
And switch off roaming in the settings also.

Gary_T, 11 Aug 2010Hi, I'm a complete newbie to this type of phone and having ... more@ Gary_T, and yy,
simply switch off "Auto Sync" in the Data Syncronisation, in Settings, and leave "Enable Background Data" ticked.
Then you can update or refresh programmes when you want.
No need to remove email address's, etc, from the phone..
@ andrew williams wals,
Carphone Warehouse have been selling this phone for the past 2 months or so, since it was released, and they are ALL 1.6, at the moment.
As for any update, yes, other countries work fine, provided you dont get stumped and flash with another providers software, like Orange, which is severely gimped and ruined by them.
the only other issue is if it has a language you understand, like English, German, French, etc.
As for the o2 version, IMO, its about the only branded one, thats basically untouched, as the only thing is pre set APN's, and an o2 bookmark, that are on it, apart from that, no branding whatsoever.
And to unlock it, to debrand it to take any sim, I mean, it can be done in a jiffy from either one of the unlock sites, or from the market mobile shops in most towns and cities, for about £15 or less.

Can you tell me do you use predictive text t9? does it add to the dictionary when using none qwerty keyboard on the o2 version?

You might want to phone them ba... moreI did ask at my local Carphone Warehouse today if they had delivery of LG Optimus GT 540 and they had not. They had no clue as to what version of Android was going to be on it at point of sale (their website said 1.6) and they now have a policy according to the woman i spoke to of not demonstrating mobile phones.
This is very annoying as their the only place selling unlocked generic versions at pay as you go prices.
You mention a .ru update do you mean for russian or rumania or similar? would the update work on a uk model?

Hi, I'm a complete newbie to this type of phone and having an o2 pay and go tarriff I've found that the phone has very quickly eaten up my credit without me even doing any surfing. Is there any way of limiting the data usage?

Is the 'force stop' meant to totally stop an application from working as having seen it tried on a gt540 the app fired up again accessing updates and wasting my brothers credit as he prefers PAYG.

Go for LG Optimus [GT540]. The display is 1000 times better than any Samsung phone. And do not worry about the resistive touch screen. The GT540 touch screen is extremely responsive. The sound quality is can be compared with any MP3 player, it's good enough. Also it will get 2.1 upgrade. The battery backup also good. GT540 is too good. This is the best Android phone I have ever seen. The touch sensitivity is simply awesome, better than any Samsung, HTC, Ericssion.

You might want to phone them back up, and ask them why they are full of crap, as this might prove them wrong
LG phone operatives know next to nothing, as your post proves it:
test version 2.1 is already running on the gt540, dated for release around sept 14. sometime.
4pda.ru are waiting for the official announcement.
As for not being able to "handle it"..what absolute rubbish..phones with lower processing and overall spec have had updates.
What LG's position may be is that 1.6 is not that much different from 2.1, so some markets may not get it, but as for not handling it..utter crap.
As for the texting app, thats the beauty of android, if you don't like an app, install a better one..
*Homer Simpson style "DOH"!!! *

LG is bringing out new models (dearer ones) that will have Android 2.2 and will be updatable to future Android Versions.
My advice is dont touch this with a barge pole 1.6 is worse than 2.1 and the texting app is crude for t9.

The lack of confirmed update for 2.1 ( although seems common practice ) is the only thing that is putting me off buying this phone ( well plus that resistive screen ). For an extra few quid you can purchase the Samsung i5801 from orange, but then that comes with all the orange bloatware!! What do you thing guys? This or the galazxy apollo? Simple choice really eh?

Anonymous, 11 Aug 2010I got an email from the LG staff and they say that it is hi... moreLG customer support staff are idiots, they know nothing.
merely low paid call centre employees, so no wonder you received a stock email response.
Ask them a question, an easy one regarding the phone, and they cannot help, so for them to say what's going to happen with the updates is like praying for aliens to crash into your garden..
also, LG blog are useless too, and really are just a PR company, parading as LG..
Android 2.1 IS in testing for this phone, and there are many countries it will come out in, so if it doesn't come out in yours, there are plenty of others to update with.(that is of course if what they are saying is true, which is laughable).

I got an email from the LG staff and they say that it is highly unlikely that there will be any OS updates for this phone in the UK. I was going to buy it as Im on a budget too, but a phone which won't be updated/no support from it's own company, is not worth wasting money on; as you will be stuck with an old OS - what is the point!! What a total let-down from LG!
