Also thanks for the additions direct tip, and the info about the o2 phones, luckily though I'm already with o2 so i get a loyalty discount of more than £10 which I could get off the phone at Additions, I'd rather get it in store so that I go home on the day with a new phone instead of awaiting a delivery lol.
Thanks again for your help, really appreciate it.
Jacob :)

Forgot to mention, the 540 is running a slighly customised 1.6 variant due to LG, and all things considered, it runs quite fast, and I can honestly say, i haven't experienced and slow downs, or major hiccups with it yet.

No Rooting is slightly different, although you can install custom roms, and/or themes, etc if they are available this way, that's what it's mainly for.

You can root the 540 already, but if you don't know what it is, then its really not for you, and TBH as of yet, I haven't felt the need to do mine, as the apps I have, do pretty much what i wanted the phone for.

I personally would stick with a proper phone, with a warranty, than to root it, mess it up, or try to install a custom rom for it to all go belly up.

You can get apps for changing themes, etc, better camera progs than the stock one, and tailor it to how you want, and i suppose if you do get it, and ever feel the need to, you can (although some providers will update their software/LG will add anti root's to further updates.

Also, some of the latest updated software speeds up the 1.6 slightly, but I find the o2 version of the phone very good, and haven't had any issues unlike orange users have(I have no freezing, and wi-fi actually works, and so do all the apps i want, etc)

You can also pick this phone up on o2 for around £119 from additionsdirect.co.uk, if you sign up and open an account with them(you get £10 off first order, and it's £129 standard price.

So is flashing the same as rooting and installing an Anroid ROM? If so then I might go down that route, that is if 2.1 is worth the hassle. I could just as well wait until it is released with a pre-installed 2.1. but that's likely to be a 2 month wait, I'm in need of a new phone now - my Nokia 5530 is just in need of a new home, the spares cupboard lol.

It has been said that some operators and LG will be bringing 2.1 to the 540 quite soon, but as to when individual providers do, only they know that at the moment.
You can flash, for example, the o2 540 version, to either an Orange sofware(you wouldnt want to, as the Orange version ic rubbish!! lol), flash it to an updated Balkan's version, carphone warehouses software, etc..the list goes on, so I would imagine that you would be in with a good chance of being able to flash to 2.1 as soon as it appears in one of these places.
The ones above are all unbranded, and apart from o2's pre-set APN's(which you can delete), they are all the same.

Thank you for your help, I've also seen around that some time in September 2010 the Optimus is being shipped with the 2.1/2.2 Android update - do you think I would be able to download the update when it comes out if I buy the phone now? Or should I wait until September to get a definite 2.1/2.2 shipped phone?
Thanks again, much appreciated to find somebody who can help.

In the Market, type "Search by Voice", and it will let you download the Google Inc. Voice Search for the phone.
It's free, so no cost, to download, or to use.
It seems to have been installed on most 1.5 Android Phones, but left out of the 1.6 OS, but this lets you put it back in.
It's about 367kbs, so it's very small, and should only take a few seconds to Download, and Install.

If you do try something like aHome,
then for resetting it as the default, press the Menu button, go to "Home Selector", and select the Android one.(not sure if the LG home, would cause issues, so I changed back to the original Android one first.

Then go to Settings, Applications, Manage Applications.
Look for Home, then select "Clear Defaults".
Press the "Home" button on phone, and it should kick in asking which "Home" to use. You want aHome.

Also, make sure to select "Use as default for this action"

Your account is linked to Google Mail, chat, and Market, and as the Market is the Google one, it makes sense to have a 1 click setup.

As for themes, Try either "aHome" or "Pandahome", for full customisation.
Search for aHome on the Market or see it in Google, for what it looks like.
Both programmes have plenty of themes, but aHome is a bit better, and has tons more themes/icons, etc.

If you do get it, just don't forget to reset default in your Application menu for home..which will stop it changing back to the original(if you have issues, some do, some don't).

Does anyone else agree that Android is the most over-hyped rubbish OS available. Everyone is praising it, but I've found it to be UGLY and AWKWARD to use.
To brighten it up I tried to use Android Market.com but found that you have to have a Google account to get on it ! Why ?
The OS is UGLY, and you can't just download new themes to brighten it up. I also have a Nokia 5800, and the Symbian S60 5th OS is SO easy to use, and I've downloaded 30 FREE themes for it. Android - Zero !
The menu is SO awkward to use, and this is after 3 weeks of working my way round it.
                            Anyone else agree ?

First of all make sure that you have a Wi-Fi connection at home. Then, use the left 'soft key' - Settings - Wireless Controls, and turn OFF 'Mobile Network'. Then turn Wi-Fi on and you don't get network charges, where all your money is going presently.
When you're finished - Wi-Fi OFF, Mobile Network ON.
BLESS YOU ROTTENFOXBREATH, YOU'RE COOL !

Libra, 27 Jul 2010does someone if the possible to swith-off camera sound? thanks!@Libra,
No muting that I can see, in the camera itself, however you can mute the phone, so i would assume that also mutes the camera itself.

Additionally, I use Camera 360 Pro, Vignette, and Picsay Pro, which turns your GT540 into a pretty good photo/photo editing handheld, with their varied fields of excellent features, and better camera performance, than the stock one.

(just a heads up, to make the most of your new toy!)

                                :)
