Depending on how long you set the screen off setting on the phone, is how long after you press play, the screen will switch off, and you can select between a few seconds, to a minute or so, so yes, the screen will be off(locked essentially) when you are playing music.

this is very good fone in its price range...
i think the built quality and the feature of this phone is reaally goood..5 times accidentally i drop my phone on the floor, and the fone is still working goood without no error or craking in its body...
the only bad thing about this phone is its battery life (but if i turn off internet connection it can last for four days) and not upgradable to froyo, altough its hardware can support froyo...

This phone just got even more special with 2.1 update. More apps faster and improved battery life. Most valuable android phone yet.
To upgrade make sure usb storage mode is not restricted to mass storage only as this is the default setting.
Do this in sd card storage settings. Good stuff.

Oh man,lots of mid range android phones out in market. I kept on researching from past 2months but not yet decided which phone 2 buy, optimus one or optimus gt540, samsung galaxy 5 or 3, or htc wildfire or x10 mini. I become insane thinking about it. When i stick to lg phones , the reliability issue pops out of my mind, wen i decide 2 go 4 htc its slightly over my budget. So jus stuck up here. Any suggestions?
