Marshmallow is most popular Android OS, Nougat closes in on 10%

Yordan, 06 June 2017

Google released the newest Android platform distribution numbers and they show Nougat is at 9.5%, with 0.6% of all Android devices running on the latest 7.1 iteration.

The most popular release is Android 6.0 Marshmallow with 31.2%, while Lollipop makes 30.8%.

Version # Codename Distribution
2.3.3 - 2.3.7 Gingerbread 0.8%
4.0.3 - 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich 0.8%
4.1.x - 4.3 Jelly Bean 8.8%
4.4 KitKat 18.1%
5.0 Lollipop 8.2%
5.1 Lollipop 22.6%
6.0 Marshmallow 31.2%
7.0 Nougat 8.9%
7.1 Nougat 0.6%

The number 9.5% is confirming the steady rise of Nougat-running devices. The percentage was 7.1% in early May and under 5% two months ago. It is likely that Android OS 7.x won't surpass the two more popular releases before Android O is already available.

Another interesting data is the 0.8% share for Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich, who just refuse to fade away. When combined with Jelly Bean and KitKat, all the pre-2014 flavors add up to 30%.

How is my comment stupid, when midrange phones and low end budget phones get either Android 5 or 6 and will never be updated official to 7 or next 8. Even my Asus Nexus 7 2013 don't get Android 7, but in specs wise it should still be okay for 7 ...

Bug fixes and security updates are necessary. Most phones don't even get them.
