Moto Razr 50 and 50 Ultra arrive in China, global launch impending
Update: The devices have now launched internationally, too.
Lenovo, Motorola's parent company, held a big event today in China, where it introduced the new Razr 50 foldable series alongside a bunch of other tech.
This year's Razr lineup consists of two phones – the flagship Razr 50 Ultra with its 4" cover screen and Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset, and the affordable but still fairly capable Razr 50 with Dimensity 7300X.
Motorola Razr 50 Ultra
The key feature of the Ultra is the bigger cover screen with even thinner bezels than last year's Razr 40 Ultra. It is the biggest display of such kind on a foldable we have seen so far, and it is a pOLED with 1080p resolution, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut and support for HDR10+. It even supports a variable refresh rate of 1-165 Hz refresh rate.
The big cover display offers plenty of features we have already seen in other Razr devices – watch videos, get navigation details, see yourself when taking a selfie.
The foldable panel on the inside is a well-known 6.9" FHD+ pOLED with an even better color gamut – 120% DCI-P3. The refresh rate is again a variable 1-165 Hz, the touch sample rate is 360 Hz in select modes, and the peak brightness is 3000 nits. There is a selfie camera behind a cutout with a 32 MP sensor and a f/2.4 lens in front of it.
Speaking of cameras, one major improvement Motorola made is in the dual camera department – the whole setup has changed, and now there is a 50 MP f/1.7 main shooter and a 50 MP f/2.0 telephoto shooter with 2x optical zoom.
The presenter on stage talked a lot about the AI prowess of the Razr 50 Ultra, just like any other company has been doing this year.
The battery is 4,000 mAh and brings 45W fast charging, as well as 15W wireless charging - both of which are upgrades from last year. The phone comes with Android 14 and Moto MyUX on top. The device is IPX8 water-resistant, a first for Razr devices, though the small print limits the 1.5m depth submersion time to only 10sec.
The Razr 50 Ultra is already on sale in China in three Pantone options – Dill, Navy Blazer, and Peach Fuzz.
Prices are CNY5,699 ($785/€730) for 12/256 GB and CNY6,199 ($850/€800) for 12/512GB.
Motorola Razr 50
The vanilla version of the Razr 50 was also announced with a big 3.6" pOLED cover display, moving away from the small 1.5" rectangular screen in the Razr 40. The inside panel has the same specs as the Ultra's – 6.9" with Full HD+ resolution and 3000 nits peak brightness.
This model also inherits from its higher-grade sibling the 6000-series aluminum frame, the 32 MP selfie shooter, and the 50 MP main cam with OIS. Unfortunately, the second camera on the back is a 13 MP f/2.2 ultra-wide snapper with a 120-degree field of view – the same as the one found in last year's Razr 40.
The new chip Dimensity 7300X was introduced last month as a dedicated platform for foldable devices with two screens, and just like everyone expected, the Razr 50 is the first to use it. It comes with a 4x2.5 GHz Cortex-A78 and 4x2.0 GHz Cortex-A55 CPU and Mali-G615 GPU with in-house HyperEngine for powerful graphics and flawless gaming, according to Mediatek.
The battery here is 4,200 mAh with 30W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. The Razr 50 also comes with Android 14 and Motorola's user interface.
The Razr 50 comes in three Pantone colors – Steel Wool, Pumice Stone, and Arabesque - and all three feature vegan leather panels.
Prices are CNY3,699 ($510/€475) for 8/256 GB and CNY3,999 ($550/€515) for 12/512 GB. Just like its Ultra sibling, this phone is already on sale in China.
There was no mention of an global launch, but all Motorola's social channels across the world have been teasing the reveal of these models today so we expect to learn more about it very soon.

Have not confirmed this model, but other Motorola models have a great desktop mode, wired and wireless. I would be surprised if it didn't come with it, especially the ultra.

Pretty excited about these phones, but also not entirely happy. The external screen upgrades on both are awesome and a welcome feature. As for the chipset choices... As usual... It's disappointing. Especially for the non-ultra. The 8s Ge...

Does the USB-C Output support Video and a desktop mode this year? Ready to switch to this from a S23 after hearing about the S25 screen size increase but a wired desktop mode is crucial to me for remote work.
