You can update with CynogenMod to Android 2.3.7 but its still pretty dated. Recent Google updates were too cumbersome and filled the internal memory completely which basically stops the phone functioning, requiring you to remove all the Google stuff including Google Play.

My first and worst Android phone. What attracted me to the "back flip" was the flip-out keypad and its cool style. Simply awesome. The camera quality was not very good, but otherwise the hardware was solid. Unfortunately, the software made this phone garbage.
First, at random times throughout the day, the SMS application would start chewing up 20 to 40 percent of the CPU time in the background. You'd only notice it when you open the phone and try to use it. Slow to respond to touch and apps ran slowly after waiting a long time for them to open. If you killed the SMS app the phone went back to full speed, but you never knew when it would automatically start again. This happened even if you used a 3rd party SMS app. The only solution might have been to root the phone and permanently remove the SMS app.
Second, as I see a few users here have reported here, the phone would develop a problem with calling delay. No matter if you dialed a number from a contact or entered it manually, after you hit "call", nothing happens. The phone is still responsive and you can navigate back to the home screen or launch other apps, but it just doesn't connect the call…. Until about 2 minutes later, when the dialing screen pops up and it actually starts initiating the call. Maddening. A full factory restore was the only way to fix this and it still happens again in a few months even if no additional apps are installed to the phone.
Don't even consider using this phone today for anything except placement in a museum. It's outdated and it was never good enough even when it was new. This experience soured me from every buying another Motorola phone.

Anonymous, 13 Aug 2014dude go for something latest, Motorola and some other compa... moreI had just got a Backflip... I wish I didn't... the OS is so outdated ... I have no way of installing and running the apps I want (what a waste of money). The only goood thing about is is the 5mp camera. It is like "good food in the stomach of a hog".

some portion of the screen (touch) doesn't work and camera button,c,h,. buttons don't work. and i am using the at&t version of this phone. how can i upgrade it to android version 2.1 using the pc's USB? and why can't i move apps to memory card?(can't use any apps)
