TIPS for Battery life directly from MOTOROLA site:
https://motorola-global-en-aus.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/71405/~/defy%2B---battery-management
The DEFY+ is feature-rich and can run a virtually limitless number of applications, making it useful for many tasks. Your particular usage will affect how long you can go before recharging your battery. Playing games, running applications, and surfing the Web increase the power use of the computer-like functions of the DEFY+ Calling and texting utilize its phone functions. Depending on your use mix, time between charges will vary. We know you want to use the device to its fullest and offer you these tips to help you get the most from your phone while going as long as possible between charges.
Things you should know about charging your battery.
New batteries are not fully charged. Plug the battery charger into your phone and an electrical outlet. Your phone might take several seconds to start charging the battery.
TIP: It may take several charging cycles for your battery to reach optimum performance.
The battery charger shipped with this device is designed specifically for Motorola mobile phones. Other chargers might take longer to charge your battery, or cause your calls to fail during charging.
Tips to extend battery life:
During initial set up of your MOTOBLUR account, your phone's battery may drain faster than usual due to the amount of data transferred. After the initial sync, and a few charging cycles, your battery will reach its maximum capacity.
We strongly recommend to keep the phone attached to the charger during the MOTOBLUR initial sync.
When setting the phone down after use, quickly press the power key to invoke a blank screen. Selecting a shorter back light duration will also help conserve power by blanking the screen when not in use.
Lower the display brightness. Or use the Auto Brightness setting.
Use the AC adapter to charge your phone whenever possible.
Toggle Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS on or off as needed. These can be placed on your desktop by selecting an open area of your screen and selecting them individually or using the Android Power Control Widget
Ensure applications are closed when not in use.
Clear all notifications from the notification bar as much as possible.
We suggest charging each night so you start the day fully charged and ready to go!
Built-in tools to assist you in optimizing battery life
There are three built-in tools to assist you in optimizing battery life.
Motorola Battery Manager
A feature called Battery Manager is part of the DEFY+ software. It provides options for significant battery savings by reducing data traffic when not needed, and by dimming screen when battery is low.
To access Battery manager
From the home screen press Menu
Tap Settings
Tap Battery & data Manager
Tap Battery Mode (To view the different battery modes/profiles)
Four Battery Modes are available:
Maximum battery saver - When not on the charger, it will stop syncing after 15 minutes of inactivity during day and night while also dimming the display.
Nighttime saver (default) - When not on the charger, it will stop syncing after 15 minutes of inactivity during Off-Peak (10PM - 5AM) times of day. User can resume syncing by pressing any button.
Performance mode - Your device syncs without any restrictions and no battery savings throughout the day. (Not recommended with heavy usage)
Custom battery saver - User customized control of the battery savings feature of your phone. (Allows you to edit your current settings with this feature).
Power control widget
The Power Control Widget gives you a quick snapshot of some of the tools that may be draining your battery. The widget can turn off / on several features: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Location (GPS), Synchronization, and also adjust Display brightness.
To add the Power control widget:
From the home screen, touch Menu > (+)Add > Android Widgets > Power Control
Data Saver
This feature allows you to help manage your data usage during normal operation of your device which would help with battery drain as well.
To enable this feature follow these steps:
From the Home screen press Menu
Tap Settings
Tap Battery & data manager
Tap Data saver
Check the box for Data saver.
When Data Saver is on, the following applications will change their behavior to conserve data:
Browser
Connected Gallery
Email
Market
Tip: If you're experiencing any issues with downloading through any of the above options and are in a known good 3G coverage area, please ensure this feature is not enabled. If so, remove the check from the Data Saver and try again.

I have been having issues with the keyboard lagging especially typing text in the browser (when using desktop user agent). since then, I also experienced extreme lag when deleting files in the preinstalled file explorer. So I changed sd cards and both problems seem to have gone (so far). The previous card has been used in alot of different phones so maybe, I will need to format that card.

How I did it was by going to the motorola website and found the page related to the defy plus. There should be a link somewhere that will check your phone for updates.
Phone needs to be connected and still within warranty.
As for battery, You should get some good usage.
I find that with 3g on and synching along with a lot of playing about, I'll need to recharge after around 12 hours or so.
