After reading all those reviews about this phone, I've decided to put in my 2 cents.

I have owned this phone for 6 months now, and it's a love-hate relationship with it. I am on my 4th MPx220. The first one lasted me 2 weeks, then the phone starts acting up (I wouldn't be able to pick up 20% of the incoming calls because the buttons didn't respond when pressed). The second one 1 day, because it can't even be charged. After 15 hours of charging, it turns on, and shuts off by itself. When it does turn on with the power cord attached, it can't read the SIM card. Even the charging port at the bottom of the phone came loose. The third worked great for 2 days, then volume went down to very low regardless of the setting, battery compartment lid came off really easily, then the same problem that happened on the previous phone happened again: the power shuts off by itself and would not turn back on at all again, ever. This last one is working fine, and after 6 months, it still does not have ANY of the previous problems.

My conclusion after my own experience, and after reading all of your comments:

1) The phone feature is really nice. Reception, convenience, performance all rank up there with the best I've had WHEN IT IS WORKING. That's the "love" part of the relationship. When the phone is working, it is really incredible.

2) With the right software (ie. Repligo, etc), this phone can become pretty productive. More so than regular cell phones I've had. Again, the "love" part.

3) The manufacturing quality control is not only flimsy, it is probably the worst I've ever seen in any production. In my own unscientific experience, 75% of the MPx220 phone I've used had some sort of defect. 50% of the the MPx220 phone had "fatal" quality flaws where these flaws render the phone completely useless (if one can't even turn on the phone and keep it on, the phone, regardless of how many cool features it has, is still useless). That's the "hate" portion. When I read the surveys here, it confirmed my own suspicions. It seems that 50% of the users here are complaining about some manufacturing defect or another (ie. some says the speaker volume is too low, some says it's perfect; some says the phone hangs, while others never observe such occurrence; some swears by its high quality, and some simply swears at it.

4) Tech savviness has nothing to do with it either. I have experienced many of the same problems described in this forum, and those fatal flaws seems to be hardware, not softwared related.

As I said, this is a "love-hate" relationship for me. For the features and the applications offered by this phone, I am perfectly willing to accept a few dropped incoming calls (even with all the bars there, as shared by some of the complaints here). A good trade off. And when it works, I absolutely love this phone. But, for the first 3 weeks, I was really hating the phone when the first 3 units I've gotten all turned out to be defective. But now, 6 months after the last one, everything seems to be ok now.

I don't undestand! I already read a lot of bad opinions about it. But here in Brazil it works very well. I could confirm last opinion!

100% garbage!!!! Im going on my 3rd replacement. Here are the issues:
1. Powers down & will not boot back up
2. Time & date consistantly reset
3. No service when there really is
4. Go into the settings menu and it boots you out back to the home screen, therefore making changes to setting impossible.
5. Camera is poor quality.

TO the gentelman who said we arent "Tech Savy". Well guess what, I am an its still garbage, Big rush botch job to get this phone to market. Highly reccommend not getting this phone!!! Good concept and great features, but if it doesnt work reliably on a consistant basis, who needs it.

For those who love this phone and justify or its not so good parts.

*camera crap : buy a real camera
*cut down pda : buy a real pda
* need windows : buy a computer
* need a phone : use a landline

the point for a converged phone is its convenience but this mpx 220 is more hassle than its worth.

I just got the mpx220, had it for 2 weeks, and now it turned itself off and won't turn on again. It is not due to the battery. I did a master reset which clears out all of your settings :( Spent an hour getting it set back and the next day it has a black screen again and when turned on gets stuck with the M logo. Sadness. Just after I took out my hands free car kit for my Nokia too. Cingular said the only fix is to replace it, but they don't have any in stock. Does this happen to anyone else? Anyone know what to do about it?
Also Sound quality is bad.
Also sometimes people call and can hear for a second and it cuts out. Restarting the phone seems to fix it. But it takes at least 90 seconds to go through its restart. Good thing I don't need the phone in an emergency.... Very dissappointed. Bluetooth ear piece is also to quiet, can't hear in a quiet car over 30 miles an hour.

This phone really has it all, but when it comes to construction quality and implementing of software it obviously was severely retarded.

The construction was had a loose lid that can be slid left to right on the hinge. Back light for the keypad is uneven and the right side is unlit.

Windows sure has great software, however load too much software and even answering a call will take time to register and for the actual answer screen to load up.

My circuit board failed and was unable to charge or sync this phone. After 1 week I was 12th in line for replacing circuit board. The Motorola service centre hardly lacks faulty mpx220.

BTW I never thought there will ever be a blue screen of death on a mobile but I have received one.

This phone sucks.

I have obtained a copy of a Cingular internal memo released April 9th on SOUND QUALITY ISSUES relating to current software versions 0.325/0.342/1.30 (Cingular) and 0.343/1.03 (AT&T). I have ver 1.30 and am experiencing these sound quality issues.

Highlights of the memo:

** Motorola/Cingular is aware of voice quality issues "which have inflated the return rate for an otherwise solid handset" and are working on a software fix that will supersede above versions.

** The software fix is scheduled to be released "late May 2005."

** Memo mentions a free Moto Bluetooth Headset "to lessen the inconvenience of their audio troubles" but isn't very clear on how to get this. Apparently this is from Moto and not from Cingular/AT&T.

** Also advises registering at www.motorola.com/us/mpx220 to be advised by email when the new update is released and how you may get it. While at the site I recommend you click the 'Contact Us' link and file any gripes with Motorola.

** According to the memo the update can be done via a provided online software update tool, or users can send in their phones for an exchange. I guess more details will be available when the software upgrade is actually released late May.

** As a last resort those who are unwilling to wait for the software release may swap their MPX220 for the V551. This is a permanent swap and not retroactive when the new software fix is released and "the customer will also be credited for the one year contract price of the MPX220" -- whatever that means.

That's all in the memo. Personally I'm going to hang onto my MPX220 and hope the software update fixes the issues since this a a great full featured SMARTphone. If not I'll still be within the 1-yr warranty period and will consider other options then. In the meantime I'll put up with this reception/poor sound crap and hopefully get a free bluetooth headset.

If only Moto can fix all these issues this would be one of the best SMARTphones in the market today. Good luck people.

And just a follow-up comment for the people complaining about the camera.....Go buy a freakin' digital camera if that's what you are trying to do. It is a phone first, and definitely a camera last. If you want nice pictures go buy a Nikon or a Sony.

After reading several posts about this phone and people saying it sucks, all I can say is you aren't "Tech Savy". This phone is like a mini-computer. If you don't want to learn how to use it or learn how to deal with issues like your home PC, then I can see why a lot of you say it sucks. It just amazes me how many people are so unwilling to learn how to use or put up with their devices. I'm sure most will agree that a computer can be quite difficult at times, and we've all learned how to deal and fix most issues. Why is it so difficult for you to do the same with a phone? I've had this device for just over a week now and I'll tell you that while it isn't perfect, it's damn close. There are so many things that you can do with this phone if you're willing to learn. I've been listening to MP3's, streaming FM/Shoutcast radio stations, getting my corportate e-mail, browsing the web, and by all means, using it as a phone! I've updated the ROM, made and copied new Home screens, couldn't be happier.

Is this phone for the technically challanged? No. So my advice is if you aren't "tech savy" then by a simple phone and enjoy it, but don't knock such a sophisticated device, because it works if you know how to use it.

Guys, sometimes i am amazed with the stupidity in some of the posts. Concerning smartphones, getting used to windows mobile takes some time. Concerning the quality of the pictures. Most of the cell phone cameras share the same hardware, as far as i remember, samsung are one of the biggest cell phone cameras. It's all about the software, install some different camera software and set it up your way. I have mpx200 with windows 2003 mobile, it overclocks the cpu causing it to get warm quite faster than before, but it's not a huge problem. The bluetooth issue is quite a problem to worry about, but it matters what do you try to synchronize it with, for instance E398 synced with 6230 is quite fast, but try to sync it with an old laptop or a regular Ericsson like K700 using one of the first protocols, it's a pain.
Smartphones will always be a problem for the regular user. Most of the people using smartphones have no idea that applications running in the background drain the battery, use memory and cause the phone to hang at times, depending on the software running, there are specific websites that can easily be found using any search engine. Lots of guys dump roms and solve specific issues. So my advice is if you cannot use a smartphone don't buy it, I agree that it looks pretty fancy putting a nude girl on the desktop, but hey... buy a nokia and stop writing crap bout moto, they use the latest tech in cell phone industry and make probably the best phones on the market!
