    @EMS06

    Hi mate, I've been reading / replying text messages using the external screen without opening the flip and quite like the feature the V8 has unlike my previous Z3.
    The main thing is to use all 3 buttons (Volume Up, Down and Select - the lowest button on your left hand side) on the left hand side of your phone (when the phone is facing you) The lowest button "select" key acts like the "ENTER" key on a normal computer keyboard which is to confirm you selection.
    When you receive a message, your external screen shows View and Ignore. To open for viewing, press the volume up/down button to direct the "cursor" to View then press the
    "Enter" key to select. The message will display on the external screen. Should you prefer to view later, then select the Ignore key. For replying, simply scroll using Volume Up / Down button to View, the press Enter button, the message will display, then press Enter again, a list will appear on the screen. One of it shows Quick Reply, press Enter on Quick Reply, another list of draft templates with pre-drafted message will appear. Using Volume Up/Down to scroll and Enter to select. At this point, you only need to press Enter twice to send out your reply message out. It's actually quite easy to do it, just a matter of getting used to. The haptic technology on the V8 makes sure every time you press the buttons, you know the phone acknowledge it. The other good thing is you can actually draft your own template message & save them for future use.
    I've been using this feature to reply messages very often and also to set the alert profile (Ringing tone) whenever I go for meetings or if I'm going to noisy places so that I don't miss calls - without flip opening the phone.
    Try this, I like it, hopefully you do too.

      Well, after reading much about other people not being able to read/reply (to) messages using the external screen, and me having never used that feature I decided to try it.

      It doesn't work on my phone. I've tried everything possible but to no avail. I can easily play or change tracks when playing music but not it comes to texts.

      Pressing the select key clears the message and leaves me with the envelope icon which forces me to open the flip to read the message.

      Srange indeed.

              I've not used the V9 before but I'm using V8 now. If I'm not wrong, I heard that both V8 and V9 are using different UIs namely Linux and Synergy. Since I've used Z3 before which was on Synergy UI, comparing with the V8 I'm using now, there are little differences but I personally feel, no big deal.
              Since your concern is on talk and text, both are easy to use. In fact I quite like the V8's text messaging (reading & replying) using external screen without opening the flip, I understand that V9 has the same feature too.

                there's been alot of talk about the two different OS running on V9 and V8...i just want to know if there's really a huge difference between the two...(considering i'll only be using it for talk & text)

                thanks

                    Looks like you were an experienced Motorola user. If I'm not wrong, that means you purchased your UK version V8 and using it in US. Well I'm not very sure, but the local distributor (US) might not provide you with any warranty if that's the case. For curiousity sake, did you purchase your V8 online from some independent websites and not from local Motorola authorized distributors? Just asking because I will not do the same in the future. I know of many other phone brands were sold online but they are not from the local agent, that'll create warranty issue. Should nothing's wrong within the first year, everyone's happy.
                    Since you've used so many Motorola models before, why not try other brands instead and hopefully you could give us some feedbacks in the future so that we all benefit from it. You know, sometimes Toyota comes out with better models than Honda and vice versa.
                    Looking back, I still love the Nokia 2100 (Made in Finland), 6" length, 2" wide, 1/2 inch thick old school model I used in the early 90s. I loved its built, so solid, sound quality was superb and reception was also stable and excellent. The built was even better (my personal opinion)than the 9210i Communicator I used many years ago.
                    So from here, I'm definitely lucky with the V8 I'm having based on your comments. Nevertheless, I'm still looking out for good phones too like everybody else and wouldn't mind changing brands if they are proven good.
                    All the best to your quest in searching for a better phone, keep us updated,
                    Thanks

                      Stuart, I cannot use the warranty on my v8 because it was created for the UK market and Motorola USA will not honor the warranty. So after spending over $700 on this phone and never dropping it I am left only to pay for the repairs out of pocket. And to be honest with you I will be looking for a new phone shortly and do not think it will be a Motorola. Previously I have used the Motorola v3i in three incarnations: itunes version, the D&G special edition and the D&G limited edition 0714. I also used and owned the v3x, v635, v620, v600, v3682 and several others. So I am not new to Motorola phones by any means.

                            @HK

                            Wow, if I face the same problems you are facing with my V8, the Motorola tech guys would really get it from me!. Since I started using handphones, in the early 90s with phones the size of water bottles I've experienced many problems with many brands before. Of course, today we are expecting better and more consistent quality from branded products. You know what, it's unfortunate that almost all (or should I say all?) brands today are manufactured in different countries mostly from the east even though they are western branded for cost effectiveness for us users BUT as consumers we need to accept the fact that quality consistency is really an issue for many electronic products irregardless of brands.
                            For me, my V8 did give me little hiccups, namely reception signal not strong enough and the battery door worn out about 5 months after use. These problems were fixed, signal's strong and stable and new battery door without a single cent! Your V8 should still be under warranty, bring it back and get your service, calibration, replacement at no cost. Don't waste your right on warranty, we paid for it! Stangely, my previous Z3 didn't give me any problems at all, I sold it to a friend, the phone's in mint condition, not a single scratch and he's really happy with it, of course, at 1/3 of the original price, who wouldn't? I'm still happy with the V8 despite that little hiccups. Performance's good and voice clarity is superb. HK, you probably got unlucky with a problem new set, my advice, go back to their service centre or even to the local HQ, get it diagnosed, maybe you'll get a brand new replacement, who knows.
                            You know, we paid a couple of hundreds for a phone and the most we are going to lose is just that, we are still better than some other guys paying 20 or 30 grands for a new car and have to live with it. Take life easy man, be ready to compromise a little and you'll be happier.

                              Okay, these are the issues I am experiencing with my V8 luxury edition: There is some sort of air or moisture bubble in the center of my inside screen that won't go away. It does not damage the screen it is just really annoying. And frankly, on a phone this expensive and this important for Motorola, I am kinda upset that after a few months of careful use, the phone displays this type of issue. The keypad has also become "glitchy", sometimes the keys stick or don't register, and on some rare occasions the 5 key reproduces the info from the 7 key? Yes believe it or not! I also have the issue of the phone shutting itself off or getting stranded. This happens rarely but enough to make it perplexing. Opening the flip overtly fast seems to expedite this problem. I cannot get this phone to play any videos at all other than whatever I shoot from the phone itself. My gf's old KRZR was able to display the very same videos.

                                What kind of voice problem and color problem that you encountered so that I can observe whether my V8 has got the same too.

                                So far my V8 is operating well for me, in fact above my expectations but maybe I missed the problems you are facing. Would appreciate your feedback in detail, thanks
