ROCHESTER, N.Y., Feb. 4 -- Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE:EK) is enabling a new level of performance in consumer imaging devices by redesigning the basic building blocks used to collect light and is incorporating that technology into a brand-new sensor.
The company has combined its recently announced Color Filter Pattern technology with a new CMOS pixel to create the KODAK KAC-05020 Image Sensor, the world’s first 1.4 micron, 5 megapixel device. Designed for mass-consumer camera applications such as mobile phones, Kodak’s new sensor enables a new level of resolution in small optical formats, using significantly smaller pixels. But unlike other small-pixel sensors which can produce poor images, especially under low light conditions, the 1.4 micron pixel used in the KAC-05020 Image Sensor changes this convention, providing image quality that can equal or surpass what is available from current devices using larger, 1.75 micron pixel CMOS designs.
“Camera phones and other small-pixel consumer imaging devices often suffer from poor performance, especially under low light conditions. To manufacture sensors that utilize these very small pixels – only two to three times the wavelength of visible light – we needed to challenge everything we knew about pixel and sensor design,” said Chris McNiffe, General Manager of Kodak’s Image Sensor Solutions business. “By completely rethinking the design of the CMOS pixel and leveraging our work with high sensitivity color filter patterns and algorithms, Kodak was able to develop this remarkable new sensor that will enable a level of imaging performance previously unavailable from CMOS devices.”
Key to the performance of this new sensor is the KODAK TRUESENSE CMOS Pixel, a re-engineering of the fundamental design and architecture of traditional CMOS pixels. In a standard CMOS pixel, signal is measured by detecting electrons that are generated when light interacts with the surface of the sensor. As more light strikes the sensor, more electrons are generated, resulting in a higher signal at each pixel. In the KODAK TRUESENSE CMOS Pixel, however, the underlying “polarity” of the silicon is reversed, so that the absence of electrons is used to detect a signal. This change enabled a series of improvements to the design and structure of the pixel that ultimately results in CMOS imaging performance that rivals that available from CCD image sensors.
Light sensitivity in the new sensor is enhanced through the use of the recently announced KODAK TRUESENSE Color Filter Pattern, which adds panchromatic, or “clear,” pixels to the red, green and blue pixels already on the sensor. Since these pixels are sensitive to all wavelengths of visible light, they collect a significantly higher proportion of the light striking the sensor. This provides a 2x to 4x increase in sensitivity to light (from one to two photographic stops) compared to current sensor designs, improving performance in low light and reducing motion blur in action shots.
At 5 million pixels, the KAC-05020 provides the highest resolution available in the popular ¼” optical format, and enables imagery up to ISO 3200 and support for full 720p video at 30 fps. The sensor is also supported by the Texas Instruments’ OMAPTM and OMAP-DM solutions, enabling a host of KODAK Image Processing and Enhancement Features (such as digital image stabilization, rapid auto-focus, red-eye reduction, and facial recognition) that provide digital camera-like performance in a camera phone.
“For consumers today, high resolution is required but no longer sufficient,” said Fas Mosleh, Worldwide Director of CIS Marketing and Business Development for Kodak’s Image Sensor Solutions business. “Smaller and thinner camera phones, high performance under low light, and superior video performance are the types of features that will enable the next generation of consumer imaging devices. And with this new Kodak sensor, camera designers can now put those features directly into the hands of their customers.”
The new sensor expands Kodak’s portfolio of CMOS and CCD image sensors for consumer and applied imaging applications, and positions the company to take advantage of the growing demand for high-quality image capture in a variety of devices, regardless of size.
The KAC-05020 will be demonstrated by Kodak at the GSMA Mobile World Congress held Feb 11 – 14 in Barcelona, Spain. Samples of the KAC-05020 are scheduled to be available in Q2 2008.

I have always loved Motorola phones and have never had a bad experience with one. I was delighted when O2 offered it to me for free on an upgrade. Sadly, within a few weeks I returned it due to the phone freezing and the outer screen displaying gobbledegook!
The replacement phone arrived and I dutifully charged the battery. The next day I took it to work and the battery was almost exhausted before the end of the day. I don't make calls but text on my phone. Aware that I had been playing with it far more than average I charged it again. The battery life is simply awful. Whilst my work does not require me to travel, and therefore can charge it daily, my Nokia needed a charge once a week with on occasion a little top up.
The build quality is poor unlike my V3i. The flip jerks as it is lifted open and kind of clicks as it is closed. If you are not careful the battery compartment can slide up easily when you go to get the phone from your pocket. The user interface is brilliant but I prefer the old Moto menu system. Sadly, I miss the old graphics for sending and receiving a text. Now the front screen 'warms up' and then a white box just appears. Trivial I know but it shows a lack of engagement with users as this was one of its pluses.
There are 3 themes to choose from and apart from shading differ only slightly from one another. To scroll through and listen to the in built ring tones you need to highlight the tone you want to listen to and press enter to bring up the play options. You need to do this for every tone. To use a specific tone after you have played it you need to go back and insert it. A real step back from the old menu system. The quality of the tones is poor as some of the tones as used on moto's for years sound old and ill put together.
I rarely make calls but when I do, the sound quality is the usual high standard. Crystal clear quality. The text messaging is easy and fast. It takes only a few minutes to get used to it. But when you go back to a Nokia you realise just how they have mastered it compared to Motorola.
The screen is clear and bright but like so many things with Motorola, an age behind Nokia. My old Nokia had 10 million colours whilst the Moto sticks to 262,000. Still impressive but when you have had better it goes against it.
Overall, happy to accept all of the above other than build and battery life. Where they get the figures from I do not know. Motorola needs to engage more with its users and its time for a new 'classic' from them. Sadly, the RAZR2 is not it.

-I bought the phone through tmobile. In this case, the phone did have 2gb internal storage, but no slot for additional cards, and came with no headphones.
Overall
In general, I really liked the phone overall. Great battery life, it feels great in my hand while I'm talking on it, and it very high call quality.
However, it doesnt feel solid-- the hinge feels flimsy. Also, the menus are too sluggish for me, and the incessant missed-call alert is driving me mad. I just ordered a nokia E51, and plan on selling my v8

Bought Gold V8 2 Gb 720$,its just Crap hopeless interface same moto useless icons sound average but u can showoff at business meetings even fonts r same moto v3 ones.Thats why moto is out and for sale

i bought that phone from Turkey from a phone seller company TEKNOSA. i used it for 10 days it started to heat really from battery and few days later when i finish my conversation with phone i put on my desk and seconds later it exploded. seriously. i was almost lose my faceoff. so be carefull with the battery.

Hi.
After a week of usage, i thought i will love the having a fashion phone. But its not the case.
The experience I have wiht motomagx is terrible. Some who has used symbian of Nokias, A200 of SEs, UIQs and MS, will really feel the differece of using a software is still under development.
Just imagine, in motomagx, how many presses u need before you can deactivate your bluetooth. its just pathetic. I hate the "REMEMBER ME" thing in texting. Its SMS, meaning, the shortest way you could type that better. so no need to rememeber words.
THe hang-up button in below the cancel. I think its not a good. The theme is really bad. Its time consuming to do all those modding before you can change the skin of your phone.

RB - To remove your voice message alert:
Go to Main Menu / Settings / Phone settings / Talking Phone... When you're there, make sure that the first option 'Message ID Readout' is off. That should do the trick. Hope this helps!

Anyone has experience with this fone.. need help!
The defaut ringtone for message alert is a voice of a man saying "new text message from (name)". I tried to change it in profiles, and themes but that creepy voice can't be replaced! I changed my call in ringtone though and that worked. Am i doing something wrong, or is there a problem with my unit? Plz answer to my email add: tastique_10@yahoo.com. I'd appreciate your help! Thanks!

This is in response to the question "how is the ring volume people??" The ring volume is good but it does vary depending on the MP3 that you are using. My last phone was a Sony Ericsson Z520 and it is about the same.

I am enjoying my first flip phone.
I just hated my friends.
When they ask whats with the phone that made me buy it....there's just nothing in can say. There's nothing to boast i said. Except that its thin. its a fashion phone anyway.
Bye to multimedia, brick and buggy nokias. But i keep my n91 though. its legendary in sonic experience.
