Project Ara would be a great concept if they extended it to other portable devices like tablets and notebooks. Upgrading hardware on such devices make more sense.

You cant ask people to buy something with the hope that years later you can still keep up with upgrade parts.
Its a false promise to say at least.
The parts you keep will always cause problem for the performance and efficiency of newer parts. Especially parts are suppose to be dirt cheap to begin with.
Try having both way(economical and future proof) is counter productive..

even when we have all socketed on to a single SOC and motherboard we still have some failures when the product reaches customer. The thing which we need to see is how big this mobile will be . Currently i can get a snapdragon 400 based LG phone for $100, then why to buy this kind, who wants mobile to last so long. better to replace it after 2 yrs
A failed product before launch. I would have loved this option in my car though ;)

Only people who can see the future will buy this (or not.)
its a senseless gamble ,buying it ,wait a year when you may want to upgrade some component, at that time finding out if the upgrades are up to par or not.
no matter how cheap it is.It make no sense to trust some completely unknown future benefit.

It would be interesting if they offered a more expensive base set with a better screen. For €50 i expect a crappy low res screen.

Interesting, at the very least. I wonder what the reviews are going to be like. Well, I started using it to call someone, but half way through the conversation, I dropped it, and the modules all came out. When I put it back together, I accidentally created the first silicon based life form.
Note: I have heard that the modules won't come out when dropped. But I have yet to see a drop test.

You have to think outside the box, you can create a phone with hardware that isn't included in the current fleet of phones. Doctors maybe able to put some sort of scanner on it. Network engineers may have some Ad hock testing gear. Who know.
What would you like on your mobile that isn't on the current fleet?
A rough and ready spectrum analyser would be awesome for what I do.

Anonymous, 24 Oct 2014Silly concept. Cellphones are getting dirt cheap and they ... more4.5-4.7 720p screen is the best I can think for a mobile. Small enough to be pocketable yet big enough to do basic tasks. Sharp enough to be easily readable yet low enough pixel rate to conserve battery/computing resources. If i have such a basis, I will never change it because both of its features have to do with the size of my Palm and my eyesight, those are not going to change. Also a 2500-3000 mah battery will easily last me a day and since battery technology is in stagnation for ages, I would not have to change that either.
All I would have to change is those 4: camera, soc, ram, storage. And I will be changing them as they become better and better. So unless project Ara screws things way too much I'm on board.
tl; dr: I only need to be upgrading 4 things every now and then, I should not need to be changing whole phones for that to happen...

And yes, eventually some of those who buy( build your own phone, that's what I call it) the Ara phone will be stock selling those old and outdated parts. But again, I believe the original idea was allow peoples to be able to build their phone the way they can afford.
Also, remember there's still 3rd world countries out there where peoples can't afford a decent phone( or just a phone).

This is so you change half of the parts every half year and the other half the next half year and getting stuck with lots of outdated parts that you cannot sell at an acceptable price because everyone else also upgraded and have the same outdated parts as you for sale.
And about this article, who is "the search giant"? Isnt this about Google, the advertising giant?
