Nokia claims N86 8MP doesn't need any xenon, world chuckles

31 July, 2009
It seems we aren't the only ones that feel sorry the Nokia N86 8MP lacks a xenon flash like its predecessor - the Nokia N82. So the Finnish company decided it had to do something to restore its flagship reputation...

it's an old story repeating all over again with Nokia. N95 was too good, so N96 was a flop. N82 was too good, so N868mp will be a flop. N97 is basically a rebuilt N95 with a touscreen and almost identical camera. I don't know what is happenning with Nokia, but it seems that since the original N-Series bang they cannot continue with the innovation in this category. Instead of going to the future they're going to the past and are not listening to the demands of the customers. And now this shameful add comparing the new device with a 2007 device. Someone obviously f***ed up with the research and now they want to make up for it by twisting the facts!
Too bad. bye bye Nokia:) Regards and please stop fighting. As for now - xenon rocks still photography and led rocks video recording. Nothing to argue about!

I see people fighting over which one is better. I hold gsmarena responsible for this. because they don't understand that phone is a phone. camera is a camera. everything is made for a purpose. if your phone does everything then why buy camera? ipod? ...?

Yes it would mach fair if they use a xenon Flash instead of LED , But it is still fair fair to say that 3rd Gen LED are not that bad as it were in 1 and 2 gen LEDs. earlier the Flash shoots with Nokia N 95 and N82 were massive diffrnt . (thought the diffrnt With K850i and others vary marginal )But i hope the 3rd Gen LED wll do lot better . it wont be a one side game it will dafinatly put lots challenege to the other Xenon flash units with help of variable apertures and other goodies that N86 have . But still fair to say having a xenon would be a great addition.

[deleted post]I think you are, I know alot about photography THANKYOU VERY MUCH, and xenon is only a small part, it is you sensor and varible apreture that counts, xenon is only used for quick light,
so dont call me dumb you know nothing about photography.
photographers will appreate the effort that has gone into this phone camera I am, and these 3rd generation led flash is good and strong

There's no doubt xenon is better, but requires capacitors and therefore quite a bit of space in the phone, that's why you'll never find a slim phone with xenon flash

For all of those people who think that led are just as good as xenon and for some who think that led are better then xenon...I'll laugh at you at pity. Seriously almost every single camera out there in the market today has got a xenon flash and they put a xenon flash in the camera since they know its good for taking pictures at night (otherwise if it was crap...why the hell would they still put it in there). I'm sick of phone manufactures toying around with led flashes and just realise by sticking a xenon flash (or both a xenon and led) in the camera will produce the user to take low light shorts. I also want to see more phone being realised with xenon flash in the future. In addition, phone with xenon flashes that work properly as phones as well and don't stuff up on you with it poor design, build or gimmicky features such as the Sony Ericsson c905 (speaker dying within weeks and buttons breaking), Nokia 6220c (terrible design build), Lg viewty or Renoir(has a xenon flash but its useless when taking a picture in the dark which isn't 5cm away), Samsung g800 (brick like and hard to take good pictures unless playing with the settings) or the classic Sony Ericsson k850i (the button really annoy me). I currently have the Sony Ericsson k800i and its has taken some awesome pictures in low light during party's and when i go out with friends and also still works like a phone. Hopefully Sony Ericsson does not stuff up with the satio like they did with the c905 and hope Nokia realise that xenon flash are the way to go before its too late.

the pictures from both phones look great. even more, the n86 seems to do beter even in low light..i mean it's there, in the same conditions there noise in the n82. i don\t think nokia put LED on the n86 if they didn't think that it whas beter.

and having xenon is not beter, LG viewty or SE k850 have a very weak xenon flash, but the n82 whas the most powerful ( i had these phones ). so in reality, some tests would prove that the source of light is not that important.

in practice, my n95 takes great photos in low light, because i never take photos in complete darkness (if i can't see what's the point of taking pictures) and most of the time the LED can do the job.

if anybody whant bether pictures than these then they would probably use a good camera (SLR or something) with high intensity xenon flash and top end lends and sensors.
