But we cant deny the fact that professional apps are at Apple and not Android, its simply where the pro users are and thats where the money is since pro users dont pay their own software but is paid by the company they work for. I wouldnt be running VMWare Workstation if i had to pay it myself for my personal use, then i would rather be like the grey masses and just use windows to begin with (not an option).
But ok, lets not mix Apple into this, just say that this is a hardware platform and will NOT attract any devs, but the binary and kernel module stuff is still real requirements for this to work as Android users expect it to work, ie latest and greatest of everything (unfortunately latest and greatest in android also means what Google can make the most cash out of in advertising revenue but im willing to ignore that also to get more focus on the real problems with Ara)

And then you will pay their food some miraculous way through a Chinese website for pirated Android apps? Why does that not sound very likely to me?
Your equation is missing a carrot, the hardware manufacturers will have to be the ones to provide pre-compiled binary drivers and the scripts to compile a kernel module for them, theres no money in it for any 3rd party developers.

And good part of them would spend good money on something worth it (rather than something totally made to serve its makers. Like, current smartphones with non-removable batteries, lack of sd slots, lack of software support etc). So this has nothing to do with apps/games and how profitable they are

Anonymous, 23 Dec 2014Performance may be worse, but it won't really matter for an... moreYes theres a way to avoid it by Google insisting on users to use the same generic kernel, but unless users will accept to not always have the latest versions of everything its gonna have issues. Debian is super stable and fast because they keep their official releases on older versions, and then offers newer stuff in their testing branch (from which components can be installed into the stable release) and then theres even one more branch with all the latest stuff called SID, and thats very funny for us Linux hardcore fans since Debian always take their release names (like Etch, Woody, and the latest Wheezy who is the penguin and quite fitting for a GNU/Linux distro) from the Toy Story movies, and Sid is the mentally unstable neighbor boy and the perfect name for their unstable branch.
Anyway, looking at the vast DEB repositories and the long way they have taken to get there it is extremely unlikely that Ara can offer anything similar anytime soon. Several intermixable branches are unlikely and i dont feel stupid if i admit that mixing the branches even in an ecosystem as matured as Debian i have run into many severe problems over the years.
So, lets see how Ara will handle all the different hardware on a single Android version, but that we will see several Ara modules that require older versions or waiting for new GCC scripts or kernels is likely to be a problem at more than one occasion.

I do that, cause i have no choice - my 1900mah battery will last no more than 3 hours with heavy usage and my 7800mah power bank is just enough (Not more) if i want to have a day with ANY usage)...
As for customization, your argument is ridiculous. A power user is someone who wants his device to suit his need/taste as much as possible, which can't be the case without enough customization tools. Iphone users (And many others) do the opposite. They wait for the company to tell them what's "best" for them.

As a footnote to some of my previous posts i like to add that i am not trying to make fun of teens who think they are power users, they are a great future resource for the industry, i guess thats the way we all start out, im just saying that they will have very different priorities after a year of real life working experience and they just dont know it yet. Installing a custom launcher with Hello Kitty theme is ok but dont ever expect to get paid for doing it.

The few who would have already gotten burnt by the Google Glass, will be hard to fool them twice. Sorry to say but the pro developers in smartphones are busy making money, and that money is found in Apple App store. trying to get money from people who prefer to sideload pirated apps and games from chinese websites and never buy anything in Google Play no matter what is a waste of time, and heavy android users dont even deny it.

Battery? I used to carry spares but nowadays we have this thing called power banks, they are superior.
Lets draw parallels to computers, you probably think you are a power user and maybe you are. i used to think that too, but then i got a job as programmer and became a real power user and after that i never wasted time on installing crap like selfappointed power user teens use (and i used to use as well, im facepalming when i remember how stupid i used to be). Real power users just dont have time for spec lists and customizing stuff, they just need it to work and work well and have access to apps/applications they need, even if it cost $1000 for a single license. Thats a power user for me, whats your definition?
I wouldnt even post here if i was still a power user, no time for that, but currently i am not in the business, i do much more interesting and less timeconsuming things now.

What about software compatibility, have you thought about how you will have to change kernels to provide compiled drivers, and how scripts are needed to compile kernel modules for each kernel?
Ok so lets say they will provide a generic kernel and only GCC compiler scripts for the modules, any idea how that can and WILL affect performance? Now im not gonna say that true compiled is always better for Linux based kernels, Gentoo has shown that it can often make more problems than good, Debian binaries has often proved superior in performance but then again Debian is all about superiority to begin with, its like iPhones, not the latest and greatest on paper but rather conservative but the result is unmatched performance, which is not gonna happen with Android because of the popular demand for always new versions, 99% of Android users accept serious bugs as long as its the latest version, totally incompatible with the Debian philosophy. And thats why ARA cant succeed the Debian way, Android users would never accept to run anything but the latest version (compare it with Ubuntu if you like, based on Debian but so inferior in every way except for UI) so its gonna have tons of issues.

I believe it will work but upto some extent, its just like a motherboard which you need to change once it can't support latest hardware. Its going the desktop computer way and there is nothing called as future proof.
