Anonymous, 27 Aug 2009Unfortunately at that stage Maemo was incapable of making c... morethe different between motorola linux and nokia linux were nokia were more focus and have more support on their software. I know motorola linux like the A800/A810 motorola that were a big sell in china. but unfortunately, motorola were not very serious in market.
Nokia is different though. It's commitment in the phone OS is very big. This is what make nokia the best phone seller. Nokia bought symbian foundation, then open source it. it bought the QT Trooltech, and change Symbian OS and Linux Maemo, and make this OS will be API compatible. (Software for Maemo just need to be recompiled to be used on Symbian, and vice versa).
And it seems you didn't know that OS-X on iphone is NOT a TRUE multitasking. It's true that apple make it for making a better experince on the phone, because with multitasking on iphone, the OS-X will be VERY SLOW. Symbian, unlike OS-X were build with low powered ARM processor in the core. Therefore symbian OS were very lightning fast. Even with TRUE multitasking on ARM processor.

Motorola also use Linux the V8 and a couple of other phone's were Linux based, Android is based on Linux as is Palm WebOS.
OSX and iPhone OS are based on UNIX.
The iPhone is capable of multitasking and does so in a number of area's, it's managed in a controlled way as the user experience is Apple's number one priority.

Pif, 27 Aug 2009Whats the problem in having 2 OS in there portofolio ?
... moreIf Symbian was as superior to iPhone OS as the post I was replying was saying, then why would Nokia have to switch to Maemo on their flagship phones to remain competitive.
Symbian has become like Windows ME the last dying branch of the Win 3.1, 95, 98 tree and just like Microsoft had to rebuild their OS based on NT, leading to 2000, XP, Vista and now 7 so Nokia has to start again.

Anonymous, 27 Aug 2009Have the odds reached one in a million yet?
Maybe you'd ... moreFYI Nokia has used more than 1 OS for a long time. They use to have S30, S40, S60, S80.
At several years back, nokia merge the S80 that used in communicator into S60, and use S30, S40, S60, Maemo.
S30 = Very cheap device, such as the US$30 phone. The OS less than 100kb. And very light weight, making it able to use a very low RAM/CPU/battery combination thus creating a phone that is cheap and have long standby.
S40 = Middle end device, the OS around a couple hundreds of kilobyte. More sophisticated than S30, single tasking, and VERY EASY to use. very fast compared to S60. and can also use low RAM/CPU so the device price range of US$70-US$300 can be easily made of.
S60 = Smartphone, multitasking... etc, etc.... OS around 30-40 MB as of now. The first S60 OS only a couple of MB.
Maemo = This OS will be geared toward MID/UMPC offering from Nokia. A phone beyond the smartphone. A smarter phone. OS were based on Linux. There is a clone (or should I say twins) of Maemo, called Moblin. http://www.moblin.org , which is developed by Intel, and latter on maintain by the linux foundation. Moblin is the x86 part of the OS that looks like Maemo.
With this portfolio, doesn't mean that S60 is bad. But it's mean nokia will give user the best of each world. Just like Microsoft have the Windows for PC, tablet, CE (gadget?), then windows mobile?...
iphone OS also were devided like nokia. the OS in iphone is NOT 100% the one you used on the desktop / iMac. It's single tasking (the desktop OS were multitask).

Half a dozen new cases of "exploding iPhones" emerged in France on Wednesday, as Apple faced an official inquiry and calls to come clean over possible risks linked to its wildly popular smartphone.
An 80-year-old pensioner from the Paris suburbs said Wednesday his iPhone screen cracked up in his hands, a day after a supermarket watchman claimed he was hurt in the eye when his screen suddenly shattered this week.
Eight French consumers have now come forward saying their iPhone screens exploded or cracked without explanation, according to an AFP tally, including a first case in mid-August in which a teenager suffered an eye injury.
Apple is accused of trying to hush up 15 cases of iPod music players heating up and bursting into flames in the United States and in one similar British case, all apparently due to overheated lithium ion batteries.
None of the incidents has caused a serious injury but Apple was forced to defend the safety of its flagship smartphone before the European Union this month, insisting the exploding screen cases were "isolated incidents."
The US technology giant, which has sold 26 million iPhones and 200 million iPods to date, said it been informed of the French cases, but would not comment until it had examined the damaged phones.
"We are aware of these reports and we are waiting to receive the iPhones from the customers. Until we have the full details, we don't have anything further to add," Alan Hely, head of communications at Apple Europe, told AFP.
But France's official competition, consumer affairs and fraud watchdog, the DGCCRF, has launched an investigation to find out whether the Apple smartphone could pose a threat to consumers.
"An investigation is under way. We have been alerted to the problem and we are looking into it closely," a spokesman said Tuesday.
France's consumer rights group, UFC-Que Choisir, also called on Apple to come clean about possible faults with its iPod and iPhone devices.
"We want to know if this is an isolated incident as they claim, or a real problem involving the iPhone -- in which case, what are they planning by way of compensation and to prevent it happening again?" said a spokesman.
In the British case Apple came under fire for allegedly asking the young girl's family to sign a confidentiality agreement -- slammed as a "gagging order" -- before it would agree to refund her.
In the latest French incident, Rolland Caufman, a pensioner from the Paris suburb of Noisy-le-Sec, says his iPhone screen broke up on July 21, the week after he bought it.
"I went out shopping, with my iPhone in my left pocket, when I suddenly felt it heat up and start vibrating -- even though I never use the vibrate setting.
"I took it out of my pocket and held it to my ear -- and saw the screen crack up like a car windscreen," he told AFP.
Caufman says Apple initially refused to believe him, before finally sending him a free replacement.
On Tuesday, 26-year-old security guard Yassine Bouhadi, claimed he was hit in the eye with a glass shard when the screen of his iPhone cracked up. He said he would seek a full refund and file suit for damages.
French mobile phone operator Orange said it had been contacted by two customers with shattered iPhone screens, out of 1.2 million iPhones sold.
The European Commission has asked all 27 EU nations to keep it informed of any problems, under the community's rapid alert system for dangerous consumer products, known as RAPEX.
Commission spokeswoman Helen Kearns said "Apple has been very cooperative," stressing that RAPEX alerts were issued every week -- sometimes leading to mass product recalls, but at other times with no consequence.
"We're not there yet. We just need to monitor closely now and see if these are isolated incidents," she told AFP.
"We'll be vigilant and if necessary we'll take further actions. But we need to examine the situation better."

Anonymous, 27 Aug 2009When will Nokia dump that shambles of Symbian OS and get so... moreSymbian OS is far more supperior than iPhone. It has TRUE multitasking, unlike iphone. it has a cut & paste & MMS ability from year 2003 whereas iphone just have it. It don't have SMS bug, unlike iphone. It doesn't need jailbreak to be freedomly use. It have a GREAT bluetooth support, unlike iphone PARTIAL bloetooth support. It touch screen is pen optimize, so user can input text faster rather than cosmetic model of iphone touch screen. It can change it battery unlike iphone. anyone can develop for symbian platform without worying got sensored by some big company. (ps: do you know that istore reject google talk.. and the funny part is istore reject some app because the ICON were looks like polariod).
so,
the list can go on and on...
the point is...
to those of you think that nokia product is not good
there is always a good and cons of each product
and people put his money where his mouth is...
nokia DID sell more than iphone... which means.... _____

Anonymous, 27 Aug 2009Well,
I could say the other way around.
when will apple... moreWhen will Nokia dump that shambles of Symbian OS and get something as good as iPhone OS.
When will Nokia develop a touchscreen that isn't a pain to use.
When will Nokia update from 80's composite video.
I'll stick with an iPhone thanks, the benefits far outweigh a list of unused features.

I could say the other way around.
when will apple match the bluetooth standard of nokia?
when will apple match the camera standard of nokia? (or samsung? or SE?)
when will apple match the web browser standard of nokia? (they both on the same open source web kit platform, but apple browser still don't allow flash, while nokia have develop the flash part)
and
if you think that nokia worse, making the same model over and over
apple is even worse... then... all the phone looking the same

Hunter, 27 Aug 2009Seriously..
Nokia need to get over this design. I mean the... moreAt nokia these were called series. They have other touch screen model but they will make the most from 5800 variant first before moving to other model.
And that model will have diff specs from 5800 variant, (change to SF^1, memory, cpu). With this strategy user will easily identiy which product is which.... if you using the model same as 5800 (5230/5530) then it must be S60 v5, if you having the model after it, it mean SF^1.

I think the design of this phone is just going to make the Nokia 5800 look cheap! I mean, I already feel offended, as a 5800 owner, that Nokia have decided to use what is nearly the same design for a low-end phone, thereby eroding the class of the 5800! Shame on you, Nokia RnD, couldn't you spend some more time and money making some other design?

Nokia need to get over this design. I mean the 5800 at first, then 5530, then 5800 Navi edition and now 5230. And who knows if this is the end or not.
