So I wouldn't worry too much. The grills were for aesthetic only, they didn't need massive speakers.

Yes - because we spend so much time listening to our phones as speakers. Don't we normally just use them with headphones? As good as they may sound, this is actually just window dressing.
Show me a svelte, small bezel phone, with no bulge in the back (I'm looking at you LGG3) - and you have my attention.

guys, come on. what's gone wrong with you?! bezzel war is going and on! i have an old HD2, and a one m7 right now (and a lot of bezzel less phones in between) but i have to say, it's smart not to put screen in the middle, yet shift it up. it will increase it's easy usage and handling. no doubt i am against the black bar, but i think, htc should keep the speaker bars, and hardware/software buttons. or at least, gives the option. (like onePlus one)
i also like to have the EYE front camera (like desire eye) and dust/waterproof standards. but speaker grills and load and clear speakers in front, is a most have. (having harman kardan, or sennheiser cheapset and speaker will be a dream come true!)

If HTC does away with the speaker design, hence making the sound quality go down, I will be looking at other options, and no longer be loyal to the brand.

But it will still have the plastic bottom and upper bezels. so according to this article the front will have (from top to bottom) a taller plastic panel, at the edge of screen and plastic panel it wil have panel speakerslits, screen, speakerslits, taller plastic panel. a.k.a it wont look anything like a nexus 9.

I've been holding off on buying an M8 for a month now because the M9's launch is just over a month away. But if the M9 looks anything like the Nexus 9, I'm avoiding it. The Nexus 9 is somewhere between plain and ugly.

I have been an avid HTC user since the beginning and I have to say that quality has gone downhill. I would love to see the new M9 with their old quality. Heck a new M8 compared to one of the first M8's and you can see quality differences. I have 5 HTC phones active and 3 of them had to be replaced a total of 17 times. That's not right. HTC go back to having high standards.

HTC's only advantage is speakers and they shouldn't compromise on them for a "better" design. Desire eye failed because speakers were totally invisible and you really can't expect any decent sound with design like this

If this rumor is true (hTC getting rid of 1cm from bottom), I believe that M9 (Hima) would be liked more people than before. I have been using M7 and its a great phone. I wanted to upgrade my M7 to M8, but due to its length, I didn't. Hope to see 5" screen in a compact body than M8.
