Wikipedia, 03 Apr 2015Samsung actually used their own chipsets in all previous ga... moreS1 was then called Hummingbird, with the S2 they renamed them Exynos, and truth be told the first generation Exynos, the one in S2, was without competition for over a year.
With the release of S3 and Qualcomm's custom Krait core's the completion finally caught up.
Next year Samsung tried with bigLittle with the S4, which they were first and in so being they were ARM's lab rats with that tech. This is were they lost to Snapdragon, plus their Exynos chips were lacking LTE then, so the majority of their phones were using Snap's, same goes the year later with S5.

Anonymous, 03 Apr 2015I've always assumed that they would integrate it, since tha... moreThey are getting close. Apparently that's the one area Qualcomm had one upped them. In all fairness there is a very high chance they probably could have done it if they were still on the 20nm process.
I think making the move to 14nm as a global first with much better performance and efficiency was the better choice.
And they did finally make their own modem.

Though I have to wonder. How power hungry is their modem? The display, SoC, ram, combination of other radios, and overall performance of the memory have all taken some large efficiency gains. And while the battery of the S6 is smaller, its only 250mah smaller. So how does it get that much more efficient, yet drop that far in battery.

The S5 LTE a and note 4 prove Amoled qhd can be even more efficient than LCD even when 5 inches or less and 1080p or less. And display mate already confirmed the s6's display is more efficient than the 1080p of the S5.

Another culprit I've heard is that the a57 cores are not nearly as efficient as we have been lead to believe.... But the note 4 contradicts that claim too with the Exynos armv8 version.

Some also say lollipop. But the s5 and note 4 again improved on lollipop.

So I'm at a complete loss how the s6 has not matched and surpassed the s5 and possibly the note 4 into the 90+ mark.

Have you seen any sources that confirmed it's integrated yet?

Their hummingbird chip in the S1 was later rebranded to Exynos. Aka same chip, new name.
And they were the top chips then. It wasn't till the S3 that they started switching off with some variants having Qualcomm SoC.
But after that the Note 2 globally still had an Exynos and it was the top performer. The Exynos S3 was also stronger, but they gimped it with 1gb of ram.

Samsung's Exynos processors are always about 2 years ahead of everyone else.

The reason why Samsung didn't use them in previous Galaxies after the Galaxy S2 is because of cost efficiency. Buying Qualcomm chips were cheaper.

But now, since Qualcomm made the overheating Snapdragon 810, Samsung has invested into chip manufacturing factories to increase Exynos chip production. Now, they will use Exynos chips for future Galaxy devices and also manufacture Apple's A9 chips and future Apple SoCs.

With the SnapDragon 810 being a colossal failure that it is and with Exynos 7420 now having its own LTE modem, I can see many OEMs begging Samsung for those chips, but I doubt Samsung would share their prize with other companies.
