Nokia suing Apple over the infringment of a dozen of patents

22 October, 2009
Nokia have obviously had some grudges with Apple ever since the iPhone was introduced in 2007 and now they're even going to court. The reason - well, Apple have used some of Nokia's GSM, UMTS and...

And its the technology in the phone, not network.
By producing it Apple has full resposibility... Its not the carrier that puts a GSM/UMTS module in it. Besides, there are unlocked iPhones to get in europe, it you didnt know that, but still that has nothing to do with this article.

Anonymous, 23 Oct 2009Who cares? Like what you said, if it wasn't Apple who start... moreNo, I havent heard any of theese Nokia fans you talk about who said that tochscreen is just a passing trend!
This is where you fiddle with the truth, there might be one or two out there, that made such commets, but many Ive talked to have had wishs for tochscreen nokias as well... some even wished there would te a touchsscreen version of the N95, some hoped for other products.
I havent heard them say that touchscreen is nothing to have, that what you say, but where is your proof? If you claim nokia fans act like this, please prove it.

Ive never said I wish apple would die, just that at this time, it would make no significal change to the market, since the trend with touchscreens is rolling.
And if you say the marginal decline of nokia is any sign of them dying you are downright stupid. There loss this quarter is not because of bad sells of phones. check the financial report again.

N900 is a real product, which has taken one step further in the direction of making phones into small computers. Appel did not, since iPhone is not compatible with Mac OS... however Maemo is compatible with desktop linux, some limitations in cpu-power and screen resolution is still there, but an desktop app can easaliy be modified to run with maemo.
The next iPhone is not a real product at this moment... typical of fanboys, to speak of next generation product, like they will be revolutionary, and apple fanboys have a really bad track record there... skipping the dissapointment of all stuff missing in the first generation iPhone (features requiered to call it a smartphone)... We heard about how the next generation iPhone would revolutionise the mobile industry, Apple released the iPhone 3G, so that was just hot air... some said that iPhone 3G was just an updated Iphone, with the necessary addons to fit an worldwide market (UMTS/HSPA, when in the states Edge was enough), and the real next generation, would be the next gen iPhone, cause this time Apple would need to win over the 1st gen users (the iPhone 3G, coulnt be much an improvement, cause then 1st generation users would feel like apple let them down), this due to the contracts signed with 1st gen iPhone.
iPhone 3GS came, hot air again.
And now you are talking about next generation again... the track record tells us, this is probably only hot air again, small updates.

What did Nokia fans say about N96, they were hoping for a great product, but when it hit the market, the fans that already had N95 stayed with that. Other got an N95 for cheap, or simply didnt buy.
The fans expressed dissapointment about N96.
Xpress music is a series of phones... guess you refer to 5800, some fans were pleased, at least in the beginning, thought that software updates would solve the problems... but still to this date, all dissapointments has not been taken care of.
Dissapointment among the fans, yet again.
N97, fans thought, now they will do a phone that will be everything the 5800 wasnt... other fans new, that running S60 5th edition, the experience wont be that great.
        The phone came out.
Somewhat more pleased fans, than with 5800.
But much dissapointment, any many complains about the sluggishness, many comments about its ram, only 128 in a device like that, is not enough.

Within the apple-lover cirlce, there is not much critisim against iphone, almost only praise.

There is quite a difference there.

iPhone, not beeing over ambitious, with practical and realistic features.
ok, where is the camera light?
        where are the SMS reports?
Where is the multi-tasking, much needed when using the phone as a training partner, a GPS... or when cutting and pasting from different webpages, in to a document. And so on.
None of theese features are overambitious.

Better camera, a bit ambitious, perhaps, but in that pricerange, the iPhone should have it.

Better videorecroding. 720p in Omnia HD, and several of units out there with D1 recording, or Wvga recording. Ambitious, yes... but with HD televisions sweeping the market, VGA doesnt really cut it anymore,

        fysical keyboard.
On many iPhone users wishlist, and on many potential iPhone customers as well. Ambitious, yes, cause apple would have to introduce a lineup of at least 2 models. But practical for many users, who have trouble with the onscreen keyboard... and under all surcomstances where the capacative screen technology does not allow input.

Better resolution of the screen. Sure the picture is among the best, however, when browsing higher resolution comes with advantages. Ambitious, shouldnt be, but in apples case, yes, since this will mean problems with software compatibility (at least apps on appstore).

        and the list goes on.

Sure user friendliness on an iphone is really good, overall perhaps the best (at least when talking touchscreen models). However userfriendly, when the specs arent there, the user friendlyness cant save the iphone.

You forget a very big group of consumers, all us out there, that could very well buy an iPhone, if it only came with a little better specs.
Im not a nokia fan, I just read a lot of comments on the web. And you are fiddeling with the truth, to make a point.
My next phone could be an iPhone, but with Apples track record, it seems like next gen still wont be on par specswise with competitors.

Apple should produce a lineup... Iphone Nano, smaller size, but many people out there think the iPhone is to big, and with a lower pricetag, this will probably be the biggest seller. Iphone classic, about the same size, but with iprovements to camera and onscreen resolution, better videorecording, to take on the competition out there. And the smartphone (iPhone "Newton"), qwerty keyboard, comes with office suite of some sort, perhaps with bluetooth headset, improved talktimes... perhaps better CPU. Multitasking is a must here, but should be introduced throughout the lineup.

So as you can tell, Im not a nokia fan.
Im just one of the many many people out there, who apple just let down with every release.

I just dont like the way you try to make Nokia fans seem like they never have critisism about nokia products... but when in fact, if there is souch a fanbase with any brand, Apple is it.
So please, no more comments like that, youre in to deep!

When I purchase a handset, I DO NOT compare to the almighty brand, who only makes crap phones with cheap plastics...or in a way I do, as I can feel how "superior" most other brands can make phones with metal casing and good finish and thin size.

if the almighty brand is the only brand left for mobile phones, I would rather NOT use any mobile phone. Fortunately that will NEVER happen.

Can you recall what touchscreen phone was offered by the almighty brand when A6188 was released?

I mentioned A1000 as "3G" touchscreen phone, or better yet, the A925. So what was the almighty brand doing in terms of "3G" touchscreen phones in 2004/05?

And if Moto didn't put micro-USB as the charging port, who exactly was the first one to do so?

You can't even provide the exact case and you're accusing my info is incorrect.

Everyone has equal right. I think we should still tolerate gay at all cost. Nokia should not sue Apple simply because it is very gay. That is not the right way. I think Nokia should try to be even more gay and then gaying Apple out of the phone business.

The Apple iphone is not an unlocked gsm phone. It's LOCKED to its carrier AT&T. Apple produced the iphone with communication capabilities according to AT&T's communication specifications and guidelines. It's AT&T that activates the iphone and make use of those Gsm/umts technologies, not Apple. That's why Nokia's complain will not work against Apple. Apple is just making the iphone. It's AT&T that OFFICIALLY activates it to tap into gsm/umts technology.

So you got it all wrong!

Its not that apple is making a mobile-phone, its all about the technology for GSM/UMTS functionality. This means that if Apple would have made a mobile phone that only connects to wifi networks, they wouldnt have to pay.
however, apple might have found another technology for GSM, a technology that is not under patents owned by nokia. Then they wouldnt have to pay either. But this seems unlikely.

And no, Apple does not have better reception or more stable connection to GSM/UMTS networks than other companys (so they did not improve anything in relations to the patented technology).

I think Nokia doesnt have a case here. It just sounds downright stupid. If Nokia can win this case, it totally defeats the purpose of Innovation. For all the R&D nonsense that Nokia claims has put in to lead to where the world of mobile phones is today, Apple basically refined that, made those techologies work much better than Nokia did. And I dun see why Apple needs to pay a technologically inferior rival. It will also be anti-competitive and Nokia stands very little chance of winning.

Let's use common sense. Its almost like Ford Motors sueing Ferrari for their V12 Engine claiming Ferrari should stop selling their sports cars unless they compensate Ford for being the Daddy of the Automobile World.

sekundes, 23 Oct 2009nokia is like colgate, the national standard for mobile pho... morenot exactly true, but thers a point. Nokia have, and have had for some time now, to large portion of the market.
Making it hard for smaller manufatcors with real inventions break through.
Seen from that point of view Apple did something good for the market... touchcontrolled devices with finger controll was in the trends, and would have eventually broke trhough, even without apple, but they made it happen faster. (had the market shares among the biggest manufactors been diveded more equally, a small company like neonode, could have made their voice heard, and made touchphone the trend by getting other manufactors to follow a few years eralier).
But since the 1st gen iphone, apple havent really put anything on the market to create or help any other trends.. if apple dies now, the market would still stay on the same course.
(looking at cameraphones and music phones, its clear that the market moved vary slow, so the touchscreen trend would hade taken much longer without iPhone).

dont think modus has a product with the same potential to be a trendsetter as neonode...

Nokia might this time be the closest to set a new trend with the N900 (combining MIDs with Mobiles... soon we might see real computer phones out there, running all kinds of desktop applications).
But on the other hand, the 5500 did not start a new trend with heavy duty phones, with features on par with the market. SE did one try...
Samsung did a low performer, and now nokia havent produced any successor of 5500 (real pitty there).
